Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post after the violent anti-reservation student movement that continued for 2 months in Bangladesh. The protesters vandalized and set fire to the PM’s residence. She had to flee the country. She reached Ghaziabad’s Hindon Airbase by C-130 transport aircraft. Here NSA Ajit Doval met her. Hasina may go to London, Finland or any other country.

She was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment in a corruption case in 2018. India has cancelled all trains going to Bangladesh. Air India has suspended flight services. India-Bangladesh share a 4 thousand km long border.

Reasons for Hasina’s resignation: In Bangladesh, a student movement started on 1 July 2024 in protest against 56% reservation, which turned violent on 15 July. More than 200 people were killed in this. On 21 July, the Supreme Court reduced the reservation from 56% to 7%. Hasina reached Mirpur-10 metro station on 25 July, and cried after seeing the vandalism here. However, she did not say anything about the death of the students.

On 4 August, thousands of people protested demanding Hasina’s resignation. 97 people were killed in a single day. PM Hasina said that those who are protesting are not students but terrorists. On the morning of 5 August, the protesters started a long march towards Dhaka. Hasina resigned in the afternoon. Thousands of protesters attacked the PM’s residence, the army did not stop them.

Are minorities in danger in Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina’s father and founder of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujiburahman was assassinated on 15 August 1975. After this, the government led by General Ziaur Rahman promoted extremist Islamic organizations. Then there was violence against Hindu minorities.

There was violence against the Hindu community in 2001 when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami came to power. Minorities in Bangladesh usually vote for Hasina’s party Awami League. Bhaskar spoke to Uttam Kumar Das, secretary of Dhaka’s Ramna Kali Temple Trust, on the evening of August 5.
