The Grand Egyptian, the world’s largest museum near the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, opened to the general public on Saturday.
Leaders of many countries of the world attended the inauguration program along with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. It cost more than $1 billion to build it.
More than 1 lakh ancient objects are kept in this museum, which shows the 7,000 year old history of Egypt. It is considered to be the largest cultural and research center of the modern era.
The highlight of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamen. This tomb was discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. More than 5500 items were found in it. Now for the first time all this is being presented to the general public at one place.

The new museum will display all the artefacts discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter and his team.
More than 50 thousand ancient heritages now together More than 50000 historical objects are displayed in GEM. These include the 83-tonne, 3200-year-old statue of Ramesses II and the 4500-year-old boat of Khufu, which is associated with the pyramid-building pharaoh.
A 24000 square meter permanent exhibition, children’s museum, conference and education centre, large conservation center and commercial zone have also been built in the museum.
The 12 main galleries present history by era and theme, from prehistoric times to the Roman era.
Many objects were brought from the Old Egyptian Museum (Cairo, Tahrir Square), while some were recently excavated from ancient cemeteries, including the Saqqara Necropolis.

A statue of King Ramses II is also included among the 1 lakh artefacts kept in the museum.
80 lakh tourists expected every year
This museum is being considered a historic step for Egypt’s tourism industry. It is expected that 80 lakh tourists will come every year to visit this museum.
The area of the museum is 5 lakh square meters (equivalent to approximately 70 football fields). A huge pyramid shaped door has been built in it.
Built about a mile away from the Pyramids of Giza, this museum has an area of 4.7 lakh square meters. It was announced in 1992, but construction could start in 2005. Some parts were opened during a soft launch in 2024.

The steps of the Grand Egyptian Museum were opened to visitors only last year.
Incidents of theft increased the concern of the administration
With the opening of the museum, questions have also started being raised regarding its security. Recently two artefacts were stolen from a lab in the capital Cairo. These also include a 3000 year old gold wristband.
There was also looting of archaeological sites during the Arab Spring. However, the GEM administration claims that the security of this new complex is modern.
