Passengers had to wait for a long time due to the check-in system not working at the airports.

Businesses and services are now slowly recovering after computer systems were affected by Microsoft’s Crowdstrike update on Friday across the world. However, flight operations are still facing problems. Experts say that it may take some time for the system to recover completely.

George Kurtz, CEO of antivirus software company CrowdStrike, has apologized for the trouble. He said that the company has solved the problem, but it may take some time for all systems to run normally. He said in a post on X – CrowdStrike continues to work closely with all affected customers and partners to ensure that all systems are restored.

The screen of most computers running on Microsoft OS turned blue
Actually, this problem was caused by a software update provided by CrowdStrike to Microsoft Windows users. Due to this, the screen of millions of systems running on Microsoft operating system across the world turned blue and the computer started starting automatically. Essential services like airports, flights, trains, hospitals, banks, restaurants, digital payments, stock exchanges, TV channels and supermarkets came to a halt across the world.

After this outage, Microsoft immediately said that it was a “third party issue”. In other words – it was not its fault. Microsoft did not have any ‘Plan B’ to get rid of the problem. It kept waiting for the cyber security firm itself to fix it.

4295 flights were cancelled worldwide
The biggest impact of the glitch in Microsoft operating system was seen at airports. Around 4,295 flights had to be cancelled across the world yesterday. In America alone, 1100 flights were cancelled and 1700 were delayed. As per Indian time, its impact started showing at 10:40 am on Friday. Heavy crowds were seen at major airports of the country including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore. Due to the failure of online services, flight boarding passes were given by handwriting at many airports.

Due to such widespread impact, it has become the biggest IT crisis in history. It is also being called a ‘digital pandemic’. Microsoft gave this information at around 5 am on Friday. However, Apple and Linux users were not affected by it.

  • Passenger Experience: Airports use Microsoft Azure and Power Apps to create mobile apps for passengers. This helps passengers get flight information, check-in, and airport navigation.
  • Security and surveillance: Microsoft Azure and AI-powered cameras work for security monitoring and incident response.
  • Data Analytics: Microsoft-powered BI and Azure provide data insights on passenger traffic, flight delays, and operational performance.

B. Microsoft’s role in in-flight operations

  • In-flight Entertainment: Microsoft Azure and Windows provide entertainment content on passengers’ devices during flight.
  • Crew Tablet: Microsoft Surface tablets run Windows and aviation apps. This helps flight attendants manage passenger service.
