The Central Government has increased strictness on illegal sale and advertisement of GLP-1 based weight loss medicines. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has intensified monitoring of these medicines and has warned of cancellation of licenses and legal action against those who break the rules.
According to the government, these medicines are prescription medicines, which are used to treat type-2 diabetes and obesity. These can have serious side effects, so they should be taken only on the advice of a specialist doctor.
The government has taken this step in view of their increasing ‘on-demand’ availability on online platforms and clinics.
