The Indian government has expedited the process of bringing back about 500 Indian citizens who fled from scam centers in Myanmar and reached Thailand.
The Ministry of External Affairs said on Wednesday that the Indian Embassy in Thailand is completing their identification and legal formalities in collaboration with local authorities.
Due to deteriorating security in the south-eastern region of Myanmar, these people crossed the Thai border and reached Mae Sot city, where they were taken into custody.
According to reports, Myanmar’s army recently raided cyber fraudsters’ hideouts like KK Park, after which more than 1500 people from 28 countries fled. Indians are the majority among them.
These Indian citizens mainly fled from the scam centers of Myawaddy. They were taken to Thailand and brought to Myanmar on the pretext of fake jobs. There, Chinese criminal gangs had imprisoned them and forced them into cyber crimes, online fraud and fake investment schemes.

Will be brought to India by special flight
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is in constant touch with Thai authorities to ensure the early return of all Indians. He told that they will be released only after the legal processes are completed.
Jaiswal said- We are verifying their citizenship with the help of Thai police. After this they will be brought to India by special flight.
According to the United Nations report, in countries of South-East Asia like Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, lakhs of people are trapped in such centers which commit fraud of billions of dollars. Even the passports of many Indians were snatched away. The ongoing conflict between the army and rebel groups in Myanmar has worsened the situation.
Indian officials met Thai officials Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador to Thailand Nagesh Singh met Pol Lieutenant General Panumas Boonyaluag, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau of the Royal Thai Police. Both discussed in detail the early release and return of the Indians.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also said that India will send its aircraft and take them directly.
549 Indians were brought back in March
The Indian government has been active for a long time to rescue its citizens stranded in South-East Asia. In March this year itself, 549 Indians were brought safely from the Myanmar-Thailand border.
The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier also warned that agents and companies must be vetted before offering foreign jobs. PM Modi had talked about this issue with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing during the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok in April.
Both countries had agreed to joint action on cross-border crime, human trafficking and insurgent activities.
The Ministry of External Affairs has appealed to the people not to fall into the trap of such fake jobs. Currently, these Indians are in temporary shelter in Mae Sot, Thailand, where they are being provided food and security.
