Keir Starmer’s Labor Party has won a landslide victory in the UK general elections. The Labor Party has returned to power after 14 years in opposition. Shivani Raja was in the news a lot in this election. Shivani Raja won a historic victory for the Conservative Party on the Leicester East seat, ending the 37-year dominance of the Labor Party on this seat. She was contesting against Indian-origin Labor candidate Rajesh Agarwal. Shivani Raja took oath in the UK Parliament holding the Bhagavad Gita in her hand.

After taking oath as a UK MP, Shivani Raja wrote on X that it is an honour to take oath in Parliament to represent Leicester East. I am really proud to take the oath of my allegiance to His Majesty King Charles on the Gita.

Shivani’s victory is significant given the recent history of Leicester City, where there was a clash between the Indian Hindu community and Muslims after the India vs Pakistan T20 Asia Cup match in 2022.

Shivani Raja secured 14,526 votes in the election, defeating former London deputy mayor Rajesh Aggarwal, who got 10,100 votes. The win was also significant because Leicester East has been a Labour stronghold since 1987. Shivani’s victory marked the first time in 37 years that a Tory has been elected in the constituency.

Apart from Shivani Raja, 27 other MPs of Indian origin have been elected to the House of Commons in the general elections held on 4 July in the UK. Meanwhile, hundreds of newly elected MPs reached the Parliament enthusiastically after the Labour Party came to power in the UK elections. The number of women elected in the new House of Commons is the highest so far at 263, which is about 40 percent of the total number, in which the highest number of 90 are black MPs.

Let us tell you that Keir Starmer has become the new Prime Minister of Britain. He has pledged to rebuild Britain. The Labor Party has won 412 seats in the 650-member House of Commons, which is 211 more than the last election in 2019. At the same time, Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party has won only 121 seats, 250 seats less than the last election. The Labor Party’s vote share was 33.7 percent, while the Conservative Party’s vote share was 23.7 percent.

Former British PM Rishi Sunak became emotional in his farewell speech, apologizing to the voters who gave a crushing defeat to the party led by him, he said that only your decision matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility for this defeat.
