To win it is necessary to get 50% votes

The ranked choice voting system is in place in New York City. In this the voter can rank the three candidates in the order of preference (1, 2, 3). If no one gets 50% of the votes in the first choice, the person with the lowest number of votes is eliminated and his votes are distributed on the basis of the second choice. This continues until a candidate gets more than 50% of the votes.

Initial results come 1-2 days after voting, but final results may take about a week, as mail-ballots and absentee votes are counted later.

There are 2 people standing in the way of Mamdani’s victory. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo himself is from the Democratic Party, but is contesting as an independent. Mamdani’s other opponent is Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. He has described both Mamdani and Cuomo as opponents of the city’s development.

Music made a rebel, then Mamdani entered politics

Mamdani was a hip-hop rapper before entering politics. His most famous song was ‘Kanda’, which went viral in Uganda. This song showed the life and challenges of the youth of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

Mamdani says that through music he realized for the first time that it is important to raise voice on inequality and identity politics in the society.

After leaving college, Mamdani moved to Queens. Here he took part in movements like migrants, tenants and Black Lives Matter. Meanwhile, in the year 2017, Mamdani started his politics with the Democratic Party.

In 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly. He won unopposed in 2022 and 2024. During his tenure, Mamdani raised issues that were directly related to the common people. This gave him a lot of popularity.

He described affordable housing as the right of every New Yorker. Demanded free public transportation and proposed raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour (about ₹2,578).

So far Mamdani has supported 20 bills in the Assembly, of which 3 have been passed as laws. One of these bills was regarding rent cap, which made him quite popular among the middle-class and migrant areas of the city. Earlier this year, he married Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji. Mamdani says that these schemes will be funded by imposing new taxes on big corporations and the rich section of the city. He estimates that about $9 billion can be raised from this.

For these taxes, Mamdani will need the support of the New York State Assembly and Governor Kathy Hochul. The Governor has supported them but has said that he is not in favor of increasing the income tax.

However, US President Trump does not seem happy with his policies. He has called Zohran Mamdani a mad communist. They have said that if Mamdani wins, they will stop funding to the city.

Rich businessman upset with Mamdani’s promises

The city’s businessmen are also upset with Mamdani’s promises. When he won the Democratic primary in June, concern grew on Wall Street. Many businessmen had even threatened to leave the city.

Some businessmen had said that New York is now just one step away from destruction.

Mamdani calls himself a ‘democratic socialist’, meaning he favors policies of the common people rather than those of corporates. Trump has threatened to cut off city funding if New Yorkers elect a ‘communist’.

Mamdani is associated with the leftist faction of the Democratic Party (DSA). This group is opposed to big companies, billionaires and the traditional policies of the Democratic Party. If Mamdani wins, it will be considered a victory for challenging the system while staying within the system.
