Citing Oxford Journal of Law and Religion research, the MP said that children born from these marriages have twice the risk of having genetic diseases as compared to normal children. This practice is also a threat to women’s safety.

Holden said that this practice is not at all right for modern British society. A worrying situation has arisen for the country because the situation has become worse now compared to the time of their grandparents. Although it has been declining in the last few years because some youth are not accepting this system, but still it is necessary to stop it.

Holden said that some migrant communities in Britain, such as British-Pakistani and Irish Travellers, have high rates of marriage between cousins. About 40% of these marriages take place between first cousins.

The MP said that around 10% of marriages across the world take place between cousins. In the Sahara region of Africa, 35 to 40 percent of people marry cousins. This culture is also very common in the Middle East and South Asia. In some parts of Pakistan it has reached 80%.

In Britain, there is a ban on disputes with siblings, parents or one’s own child, but there is no law there regarding marriages between cousins. Holden’s proposal was supported by many Conservative colleagues. However, it is not possible to make this law without the support of the government.

Independent British MP Iqbal Mohammed has opposed this proposal. He said in Parliament that it is not right to ban the marriages of cousins. The Gujarati origin MP said that this problem can be solved only by increasing awareness.

Iqbal Mohammad is originally from Gujarat. He said that 35 percent to 50 percent of the sub-Saharan African population prefers cousin-sister marriage. It is extremely common in the Middle East and South Asia.
