Indonesia has signed an agreement with India to buy BrahMos missile. Indonesia Defense Ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirat gave this information to news agency Reuters on Monday.

BrahMos, a company co-owned by India and Russia, told Reuters it was in advanced talks with Jakarta on a deal worth $200 million to $350 million.

Ricoh said that this agreement is part of the modernization of military hardware and defense capabilities. Earlier, Philippines had also purchased BrahMos missile system.

India handed over the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines on 19 April 2024. Philippines is the first foreign country to get BrahMos. India had signed a deal worth $375 million (Rs 3130 crore) for the sale of BrahMos missile to the Philippines in January 2022.

The Indian Air Force handed over these missiles to the Philippines Marine Corps through C-17 Globe Master aircraft. The speed of these missiles is 2.8 Mach and the range is 290 km. One Mach is the speed of sound 332 meters per second.

The Philippines has received the delivery of the missile system at a time when tensions are rising between it and China in the South China Sea. Philippines will deploy 3 BrahMos missile systems in coastal areas (South China Sea) to deal with the threat from China.

Each system of BrahMos has two missile launchers, a radar and a command and control center. Through this, two BrahMos missiles can be fired at the enemy within 10 seconds from submarine, ship, aircraft. How did BrahMos get its name?

BrahMos has been developed under a joint agreement between India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPOM. BrahMos is a medium-range stealth ramjet supersonic cruise missile. This missile can be launched from ship, submarine, aircraft or land.

According to Defense Department officials, BrahMos was named after Brahmastra, the powerful weapon of Lord Brahma. However, it has also been claimed in some reports that this missile has been named after two rivers, Brahmaputra of India and Moskva River of Russia. It is believed that it is the fastest anti-ship cruise missile in the world.
