A Hindu businessman was beaten to death in Ghazipur district of Bangladesh on Saturday. He was trying to save a minor employee working in his sweet shop. Police have detained three people in the case. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Liton Chandra Ghosh alias Kali. He was the owner of Baisakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel. This shop is located on Barnagar Road near the municipal area. There was a dispute over a trivial matter. According to the police, innocent Mia (28) came to the shop at around 11 am on Saturday morning. He had a dispute with Anant Das, a 17-year-old employee working in the shop, over some trivial matter. Within no time the altercation turned into a fight. After some time, Masoom Mia’s parents, Mohammad Swapan Mia (55) and Majida Khatoon (45) reached the spot and joined the fight. When shop owner Liton Chandra Ghosh tried to intervene and save his employee, the attackers attacked him too. During this time, Liton was hit on the head with a shovel. According to the police, the injury was so serious that he died on the spot. People caught the accused and handed them over to the police. After the incident, anger spread among the local people. People caught the three accused Swapan Mia, Majida Khatoon and Masoom Mia and later handed them over to the police. Kaliganj police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Zakir Hussain confirmed the incident. He said that all three accused are in police custody and legal action is being taken in the murder case. Police say that investigation into the matter is ongoing. Further legal action will be taken after the initial process is completed. Attacks on minorities increased after the coup in Bangladesh. The situation in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, with a population of about 17 crores, has remained unstable since the coup of 2024. Attacks on minorities have increased due to increased activism of Islamic organizations. The population of minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus and Sufi Muslims, is less than 10%. Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council has expressed serious concern over the increasing attacks on minority communities across the country. The organization says that incidents of communal violence have increased before the national elections to be held in February. India said – Repeated attacks on minorities are worrying. India has also expressed concern over the treatment of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. Last week, India’s Foreign Ministry had said that it is continuously monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in the weekly press briefing – We are seeing a worrying pattern of repeated attacks on minorities and their properties in Bangladesh. Such incidents should be dealt with strictly and immediately. He also said that in many cases these attacks are downplayed as personal enmity or political reasons, which emboldens radical elements and deepens the feeling of insecurity among minorities.
