A High Court in Bangladesh has reduced the death sentence of Paresh Barua, Chief of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), a banned terrorist organization in India, to life imprisonment. According to Dhaka Times, former Bangladesh minister Lutfozzaman Babar and five more people have been acquitted in the same case, while the rest have been sentenced to 10 years.

All of them were found guilty in the 2004 Chittagong arms case. On 1 April 2004, 10 trucks loaded with arms and ammunition were seized in Bangladesh. This was the largest consignment of arms seized in the history of Bangladesh.

The seized weapons included Chinese made AK-47, semi-automatic rifles, rocket launchers, rocket shells, pistols, hand grenades and a large quantity of cartridges besides explosive materials.

Evidence was found of the involvement of the then Minister of State for Home Lutfozzaman Babar in smuggling of these weapons. He also gave shelter to ULFA Chief Paresh Barua in Bangladesh for some time. However, it is not known where Paresh Barua is right now. Many media reports have claimed that he is hiding on the China-Myanmar border.

10 years ago 14 people were given death sentence

The Chittagong arms case had greatly damaged relations between India and Bangladesh. Then there was Khaleda Zia’s government in Bangladesh. According to BBC, Indian officials had then claimed that the weapons were confiscated only under pressure from India, if India had not exerted pressure then these weapons would have reached the separatists. Although the Bangladesh government had denied this.

This case gained momentum after Sheikh Hasina came to power in 2009. After this, in January 2014, a Chittagong court awarded death sentence to 14 people, including Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Matiur Nizami, who was the Industry Minister in the BNP government, Home Minister Lutfazzaman Babar and Paresh Barua on charges of being linked to this incident. Was heard.

One of these convicts, Motiur Rahman Nizami, was hanged in 2016. He also had cases of crimes against humanity.

ULFA was formed 45 years ago

ULFA is a terrorist organization. It was made by 6 people in the year 1979. This organization carried out incidents of violence in Assam and many neighboring states. ULFA has signed a peace agreement with India in the year 2023. At the same time, Barua is a key member of ULFA-I, a separate faction of ULFA.
