Protests have been going on in Bangladesh for several days. Students are protesting against reservation.
Thousands of students in Bangladesh are protesting on the streets and demanding the abolition of reservation. This protest has now taken a violent turn. 6 people have died in clashes with the police. At the same time, more than 400 protesters are reported to be injured.
According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Dhaka Tribune, six people including a child were shot in a violent clash between protesting students and police during a movement in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday evening. The situation has become so bad that educational institutions in different cities of Bangladesh including Dhaka have been closed indefinitely.

The protesting students have announced a nationwide bandh on Thursday. The leaders of the student movement have said that everything will remain closed on Thursday except hospitals and emergency services. During this time, only the ambulance service will be allowed to go out on the roads.

The picture is of Dhaka University where violence has been going on for several days. Most of the injured in this are girl students.

Girl students are also participating enthusiastically in these demonstrations.
Violence has been continuing in Bangladesh for the last 4 days.

Student organisations in Bangladesh have called for a nationwide shutdown on Thursday.
PM Hasina did not allow the Supreme Court’s decision to be implemented
These students are protesting against reservation in government jobs for the children of soldiers who fought in the 1971 Liberation War. A week ago, the Supreme Court had banned reservation in government jobs, but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not allow this decision to be implemented. The Hasina government says that this decision is in their hands.
In Bangladesh, people who fought the 1971 war against Pakistan are called war heroes. 30% of the jobs in Bangladesh are reserved for the children of these war heroes. Students are angry against this reservation. Students demand that jobs should be given on the basis of merit. Just because someone’s ancestors were war heroes does not mean that their children should also get the benefit.
PM Hasina’s address to the nation
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation. She has announced that a judicial inquiry committee will be formed to investigate the deaths in the movement against reservation. During this, Sheikh Hasina appealed to the protesting students to maintain faith in the judicial system of the country. She assured the students that they will get justice.
Sheikh Hasina expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property in the reservation protests. She appealed to the students not to give the miscreants a chance to take advantage of the situation. The Prime Minister said that those who have committed murders and damaged public property will be brought to justice, no matter which party they belong to.
This is the first time after the general elections held in January that such large scale protests are taking place in the country. These protests are also being joined by the children of the people who gave independence to Bangladesh in 1971. People say that the Hasina government has given reservation to those people whose income is high.
These are the people who are considered Hasina’s voters. The government says that 30% reservation in jobs was given to handicapped people and people from minority communities.
What are the reservation rules?
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina implemented new reservation rules in 2018. In this, 30% reservation has been given to the children of freedom fighters, 10% for backward districts, 10% for women, 5% for minorities and 1% for the disabled. In this sense, there is 56% reservation in government jobs. Protests are being held all over the country against this.
Students have 5 demands….
1- Reservation should be reduced from 56% to 10%.
2- If no eligible candidate is found from the reserved seats then recruitment should be done from the merit list.
3- There should be a same examination for all.
4- Age should be same for all the candidates.
5- No candidate should use reservation more than once.
