Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar reached Kolkata on Sunday evening to review the preparations for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Gyanesh Kumar reached Kalighat on Monday during the 3-day long full bench meeting of the Election Commission.
The protesters present outside the temple showed Go Back posters and black flags. Earlier on Sunday also, when he reached Kolkata, some people came in front of his convoy with flags and were seen shouting slogans.
Here, a BJP delegation met the full bench of the Election Commission of India on Monday and demanded that the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections be conducted in three phases only.
The tenure of the West Bengal Assembly is going to end on May 7. Elections for 294 seats are expected in April. In 2021, TMC formed the government by winning 215 seats. Mamta Banerjee was elected Chief Minister.

Protest from airport to hotel
On Sunday, locals from West Bengal gathered in front of a private hotel in New Town, wearing T-shirts with the words ‘Go back, Gyanesh Kumar, murderer of democracy’. When CEC Gyanesh Kumar along with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners SS Sandhu, Vivek Joshi and Senior Deputy Election Commissioners Manish Gard and Pawan Kumar reached Kolkata Airport, protesters reached there too.
Kolkata Police stopped the protesters from going near the convoy vehicles.
BJP delegation received from poll panel, put forward 16 demands
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioner SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi are meeting delegations of recognized national and state parties on Monday to hear their concerns and suggestions regarding conducting the elections.
The BJP delegation submitted a 16-point demand letter stating concerns over the security environment in the state ahead of the assembly elections. The Election Commission should take steps to ensure that there is no violence in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
BJP proposed that any booth which has more than 85 percent polling or has a recorded history of violence during or after previous elections, should automatically be considered sensitive and should be given extra security.
