Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in jail by a Paris court on Thursday on charges of criminal conspiracy (Criminal Conspiracy).

Along with this, he has been fined 1 lakh euros (about 92 lakh rupees) and a ban on taking any government post for 5 years. The case is related to illegal funding from Libya’s then dictator Muammar Gaddafi for his victory in the 2007 presidential election.

However, the court acquitted Sarkozy with other allegations like corruption and illegal funding. 70 -year -old Sarkozy has announced to appeal in the upper court, describing the verdict as against the law.

Case related to illegal funding in 2007 presidential election

The court ruled that Sarkozy, along with his close associates, had conspired to take money from Libya for the 2007 election campaign. However, it could not be proved that this money was used in his campaign, so he was acquitted of other allegations like corruption.

Nevertheless, the court said that this conspiracy is a serious crime, as it breaks the trust of the people. Sarkozy will have to go to jail within a month. This is the first time in the history of modern France when a former president will have to go to jail.

Sarkozy said- Gaddafi family accused of taking revenge

Sarkozy has denied all the allegations. He says that the case is a “political conspiracy” and the Gaddafi family made these allegations to take revenge. Sarkozy said- If they have to sleep in jail, they will raise their heads in jail and sleep.

Sarkozy advocated military intervention to remove Gaddafi in 2011, after which Gaddafi’s power ended and he was killed. Sarkozy says that these allegations have changed.

Sarkozy will be detained after a month

The court ordered Sarkozy to be taken into custody after a month instead of sending him to jail immediately. There were also 11 other accused in the case, including three former ministers.

Claud Guest, who was the Home Minister in the Sarkoji government, was sentenced to 6 years, but will not have to go to jail due to poor health. At the same time, former minister Bryce Hurtfue was sentenced to 2 years, which he can complete at home with electronic tag.

Case of pressurizing Sarkozy on witness

An important witness in the case, Lebanese businessman Ziyad Takiadeen had earlier told the court that he had brought cash -filled suitcases from Libya to France.

Later he was overturned by his statement, due to which the case of pressurizing Sarkozy and his wife on the witness is also going on. Takidin died in Beirut on Tuesday, two days ago.
