The Election Commission in West Bengal has released the final voter list on Saturday after Special Intensive Revision (SIR). According to the list, the documents of about 60.06 lakh voters of the state are still under scrutiny.

The largest number of these are from Muslim dominated and border districts. The Commission has removed a total of 63.66 lakh names from the voter list of the state.

The total number of voters in Bengal has decreased from 7.66 crore to 7.04 crore. Whereas BJP has termed it as ‘decisive war against infiltrators’.

Murshidabad and Malda top in padding cases

According to Election Commission data, Murshidabad district has the highest number of 11.01 lakh voters whose scrutiny is still pending. Immediately after this comes Malda, where the documents of 8.28 lakh voters are yet to be verified by the judicial authorities.

According to the 2011 census, Murshidabad has 66% Muslim population and Malda has 51% Muslim population and both these districts are adjacent to the border with Bangladesh.

Most ‘suspicious’ in border districts

The number of pending cases is also quite high in border districts like North 24 Parganas (5.91 lakh), South 24 Parganas (5.22 lakh) and North Dinajpur (4.80 lakh).

On the contrary, the lowest number of such voters has been found in the hilly and tribal dominated areas of the state like Kalimpong (6,790) and Jhargram (6,682).

What will happen to these 60 lakh voters?

Election Commission officials have clarified that the voters whose names have been kept in ‘under adjudication’ have not been removed from the list at present.

Judicial officers will thoroughly examine these documents and the process of correction or removal of names will take place only after complete investigation.

The objective of the Commission is to ensure that the name of any eligible citizen is not omitted. For this, a supplementary list can also be released in the coming time.

BJP said – remove infiltrators from voter list

Meanwhile, BJP President Nitin Naveen claimed that more than 50 lakh people removed from the voter list were ‘infiltrators’. He alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made these infiltrators her vote bank by making them fake documents and gave them legal protection.

Naveen said that these infiltrators were taking advantage of government jobs and schemes entitled to Indians. He warned that now the time has come to throw these people out of Bengal. Read the full news…
