Ireland’s star batsman Paul Stirling has announced to step down from the captaincy of the T20 International team. He has taken this decision after the team’s poor performance in the T-20 World Cup.

35-year-old Sterling said in a statement on Thursday that he will continue playing in all formats. He said- ‘With this decision, I will be able to focus on improving myself and contributing more on the field.

The Irish team could not progress beyond the group stage in the T-20 World Cup. At the same time, Sterling himself was out of the tournament midway due to a knee injury.

Sterling said- will give full support to the new captain Sterling said- ‘This is the right time for the team to make a new beginning. The new captain will have my full support. He said- ‘It has been a great honor for me to captain Ireland in T-20. I am very proud of this.

Sterling said- ‘It is my good fortune to captain the country. I am extremely grateful for the support I have received during my tenure in this role. Sterling took charge of the team in 2023 after Andy Balbirnie. He captained in 48 T20 matches. He said- He will continue captaining the ODI team. They will focus on qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

New captain not announced, Lorcan-Harry contender Cricket Ireland has not yet announced the new captain. Wicketkeeper-batsmen Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector are being considered as possible options. Lorcan Tucker captained the team after Sterling got injured in the World Cup.

Paul Stirling was injured in the match against Australia on 11 February.

Ireland will play T-20 series with India in June Ireland will play a T20 series against India in June 2026. Ireland will enter this series with a new captaincy. However, the methods have not been announced yet. Ireland’s upcoming domestic season has proposed series against New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, which are expected to be announced soon.
