Expert Omar Coronel says, ‘The movement that started with the demand for pension has now become public anger against corruption and insecurity.’ The protesters said, ‘To protest is a right, to kill is a crime.’ One woman’s poster read, ‘From murderer to rapist, same filth.’

After this, on September 27, thousands of youth raised slogans and protested against President Dina Bolivarte in the capital Lima. Boluarte’s image was very bad among the public. Under his rule, an attempt was made to suppress the protests in 2022, in which 50 people were killed.

Actually, changes were made in the rules of pension reform in Peru, due to which people were angry. According to the new rule, every person over 18 years of age in Peru will have to join some pension company.

Changes in pension plan

Here, corruption, economic insecurity, rising crime and lack of accountability have angered the youth. Following the ouster and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo in 2022, dozens of protesters were killed in a crackdown by security forces. The government is being questioned on this also.

The Peruvian government has recently made changes to the pension system. Earlier, people could join the pension scheme if they wanted, but it was not mandatory.

Now the government has made a rule that any citizen in Peru who completes the age of 18 years will have to join some pension providing company/institution. That means no adult can stay out of this system.

Pension providers are those private or government institutions which deposit a fixed amount every month from the people. The same money is returned in the form of pension in retirement or old age.

According to Peru’s National Statistics Agency (INEI), 27% of the country’s population is between the ages of 18 and 29. These youth are the backbone of this movement.

Why are people angry?

One Piece character becomes symbol of youth

This time, Peru’s GenZ i.e. youth aged between 18 to 29 years are at the forefront of the protest. They are using the character ‘Luffy’ from the Japanese comics ‘One Piece’ as their symbol. A skull cap symbol is seen in the hands of the protesters, which is Luffy’s identity.

Leonardo Munyos, a student leader, said, ‘Luffy goes from place to place to liberate people from corrupt and dictatorial rulers. The situation is the same in Peru. Will not remain silent any longer’

Student Santiago Zapata said – ‘We are tired of the fact that death and corruption have been normalized. Our generation will no longer sit silent. The government should be afraid of the public, not the public of the government.

One Piece is a famous Japanese comics and anime series. Its story is based on pirates, who fight for freedom, friendship and justice. This series is very popular among the youth all over the world.

Plagued by unemployment, corruption and economic inequality, this young generation is no longer just protesting, they are changing governments.

In the past year, widespread demonstrations led by Gen-Ji took place in countries such as Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco and Botswana.

In Madagascar the President stepped down, in Morocco the army intervened and in Kenya the government caved in. Whereas in Botswana, the youth overthrew the 60 year old government through voting. This generation, organized through social media, is now creating a new definition of democracy, accountability and employment.

Youth have also intensified protests in African countries against unemployment and corruption.
