Former Prime Minister and JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda has written a letter to Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi regarding the way the opposition created ruckus in Parliament. He criticized opposition leader Rahul Gandhi’s protest in Parliament without naming him. Referring to Rahul’s recent protests in a two-page letter, 92-year-old Deve Gowda said that the dignity of democratic institutions is being harmed by continuous sloganeering, displaying posters and demonstrations during the budget session of Parliament. Protesting by sitting on the stairs in the Parliament complex with tea and snacks lowers the dignity of the institution. Deve Gowda expressed concern over the increasing disorder in the Parliament complex and the manner of protest, calling it a ‘culture of casual protest’. Appealing to Sonia Gandhi, he said – Being a senior leader of the opposition, you should talk to your MPs and explain to them to maintain parliamentary decorum. Deve Gowda told Sonia – Ask senior leaders to exercise restraint. Deve Gowda further told Sonia – The chaotic situation arising inside the Parliament and in its premises can damage the foundation of democracy. Opposition parties have every right to protest, but the method of protest should be such that it does not harm democratic institutions. He appealed to Sonia Gandhi to talk to senior opposition leaders and based on her experience and maturity, advise them to exercise restraint. The former Prime Minister said that in the last 75 years, the country has together built democratic institutions and the method of protest should be such that it does not weaken this system. At the end of the letter, he said that protest is an important part of democracy, but it should be within the ambit of parliamentary rules and traditions so that the dignity of democratic institutions is maintained. March 12: Rahul had tea and biscuits on the steps of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi had protested against the government along with MPs in the Parliament complex against the shortage and rising prices of LPG gas cylinders across the country. During this, he sat with the MPs on the steps of Makar Gate of Parliament and had tea and biscuits. Shah said – Rahul is spoiling India’s image across the world. Amit Shah, while addressing a gathering in Guwahati, Assam on March 15, said – Rahul sometimes sits at the door of Parliament and eats tea and pakodas. Do they not realize which place is appropriate to have breakfast? Shah further said- Parliament is the supreme institution of our democracy. Sitting there and protesting is also not a democratic tradition. But you have gone two steps ahead of the opposition. You are eating tea and pakodas there. This is tarnishing India’s image across the world.
