Former Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli has announced the formation of ‘National Volunteer Service’, a security force for his party CPN-UML.
Oli said that the security system in the country is continuously deteriorating. He has accused the government of failing to protect people, media and professionals. Oli said that now his party itself will step forward and take the responsibility of security.
Oli had to resign as PM after Gen-Z protests in September. Since then, clashes have taken place at many places between UML workers and youth groups. The Gen Z group and UML workers came face to face soon after the UML rally in South Nepal last week. After this there was violence for two days.
Preparation to field army in interim government elections
Amidst the continuous clashes in Nepal, the interim government is preparing to deploy the army in the general elections.
The National Security Council (NSC), after reviewing the security situation, has recommended to the government that the help of the Army be taken to ensure peaceful voting in the general elections to be held on March 5, 2026.
NSC Member Secretary and Defense Secretary Suman Raj Aryal said that the objective is to make the elections free, fair and fear-free.
The Home Ministry has already approved a joint security plan and instructions have been issued to implement it in 77 districts of the country.
The government believes that in view of the increasing tension and conflict before the elections, deployment of the army is the safest option.
Violence broke out against UML leaders
Violent clashes broke out between Gen Z youth and workers of the ruling party CPN-UML on November 19 in Bada in Nepal’s Madhesh province. Went. When the situation worsened, the administration had imposed curfew.
Top UML leaders Shankar Pokharel and Mahesh Basnet were to come to Simra in Bada district to participate in the party’s ‘Youth Awakening Campaign’. Before his arrival, the Gen Z group had appealed on social media to protest. After these posts the police had increased security.
Around 10 am on Wednesday, 100-150 youth gathered at Simra Chowk, where they clashed with UML workers. The dispute escalated into stone pelting and fighting. Gen Z leaders allege that UML workers attacked them, injuring several youths.
Violence continues even during curfew
Even during the curfew, many Gen Z youth took to the streets, burnt tires and accused the police of favoring the UML. He also lodged a complaint against UML workers at the police station, although no one has been arrested.
