There has been a dispute between the two communities over land for the last several years.

At least 36 people have been killed in a land dispute between Shia and Sunni Muslims in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. More than 80 people are injured. According to news agency AP, clashes between the two communities have been going on for 5 days. An officer posted in Kurram said that many houses have been burnt in the fighting.

The government’s efforts to end the violence have so far proved unsuccessful. According to reports, there have been several Shia-Sunni conflicts in Kurram in the past few years. The Sunni community gets support from the Afghan tribe across the border. In July too, a dispute broke out between the two communities over land in which more than 50 people were killed.

A fight broke out between two families, which spread throughout the district The root of this dispute is a 30-acre piece of land. There is a dispute between two tribes in Bushehra village of Kurram district over its ownership. In August, officials along with the elders of the tribal community Jirga had brokered a compromise between the two communities, after which the dispute had stopped for some time.

According to a report in Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the dispute between the Sunni Midgi and Shia Malikhel communities began in 2007. There were incidents of violence even then. There was a dispute in July last year as well, in which several people were killed.

The dispute ended last year, then started again In July 2023, after the fighting between the two parties stopped, an agreement was reached between them. It was decided that the government will decide who owns the land. Both parties will have to follow the rules of the Land Commission, which resolves land disputes. After this, the commission gave its decision and gave this land to the Shia community.

But a year later, the dispute started again. In July 2024, when talks were going on regarding a land dispute, a person opened fire. After this, a bloody conflict started between the two communities.

There are many disputes before the formation of Pakistan, they have not been resolved till now According to the report of Samaa channel, currently there are eight major conflicts going on in Kurram. Most of these are from before the formation of Pakistan. All these cases are related to land. Due to the lack of land reforms, these disputes are still continuing. Whenever a dispute starts in these, it turns from a tribal fight to a communal conflict.
