The convoy of Bangladesh’s interim government’s Chief Advisor and Nobel Winner Professor Mohammad Yunus faced opposition in New York.
Activists of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League threw eggs at Akhtar Hussain, a student who came with Younus and called him a terrorist. During this, the mob also shouted slogans against Younus.
Yunus and his associates arrived in New York on Sunday to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
As soon as his convoy came out of JFK International Airport, the leaders and activists of the Awami League present there started demonstrations.
In the viral video on social media, the protesters are calling Akhtar Hussain ‘terrorist’ and raising slogans against the Yunus government.

Akhtar came into discussion with student movement
Akhtar Hussain is one of the leaders who led the student movement against the Sheikh Hasina government in July 2024. Under the pressure of this movement, Hasina had to resign on 5 August and later took refuge in India. Only after this, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Younis.
According to experts, Akhtar Hussain, who plays an active role in the student movement, is also considered a direct enemy of Awami League.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were also present in Yunus’s convoy.
However, the protesters did not target him. The anger of Awami League workers, especially on Akhtar Hussain and Younus, came out.
Awami League activists also lay down in front of a car in Younis’s convoy.
Yunus met American messenger Sergio for India
Amidst the controversy, Younus met American Special Envoy Sergio Gore and the US Ambassador nominated for India. He assured that Bangladesh will have independent, fair and peaceful elections in the first part of February 2026.
Issues such as trade, South Asian Cooperation, SAARC reactivated and Rohingya crisis were also discussed in the meeting. Yunus appealed to the US to continue to help for more than 1 million Rohingya refugees living in the Cox Bazaar.
