The election of Mayor of New York City, USA, has become interesting as the current Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has announced to withdraw from the next election campaign.
He has withdrawn his name due to continuous falling popularity and lack of funding after allegations of corruption in 2023.
He had a strong hold between African-American and working-class voters earlier, but federal investigation and administrative failures caused serious injuries to his credibility.
In December 2023, the approved rating of Adams in the election survey was 28%, which has come down to more than 10% in the past.
After the withdrawal of Adams, the Indian Democratic candidate Johran Mamdani has become a front runner in the New York Mayor election on 4 November 2025.
The next mayor of New York is likely to compete between Mamdani (in between) and Andrew Kuoom (left).

1. Johran Mamdani: Focus on housing and inflation

Background- Are of Indian origin. Members of New York State Assembly from Queens. The new generation is considered a progressive face.
The main points- Housing crisis, increasing rent, inflation control and opposed to corruption.
Strategy- Balance policy on security and economic development.
Popularity- 52% of the people’s choice in NYT/Sienna.
In January 2025, the support was 35%, then by September 2025, it increased to 44–46%. Focus on increasing further growth after Adams is removed.
2. Andrew Kuoomo: Trump’s bet on Democratic leader
Age- 67 years
Background- Former New York Governor, Senior Leader of Democratic Party.
The main points- Law and order, development of infrastructure, economic reconstruction and stable governance.
Strategy- Drawing Adams’ Democratic supporters and traditional Democrat voters; Especially the elderly and middle class voters.
Popularity- 59% in NYT/Sienna survey do not like. The support from January 2025 is almost stable, right now at 24–26%.
Curtis Sliva: Republican’s victory is almost impossible

Trump bets on Kuomo instead of his party candidate
The winning of Republican in New York City is almost impossible. The last Republican Mayor was Michael Bloomberg, who took over from 2002 to 2013.
Since then every election Democrats have been winning. The current Republican candidate Sliva’s popularity is limited to 10–15%, making it not possible for him to win.
Trump knows that the Republican Volt will not be decisive, so they are strategically betting on the candidate who can stop the mamdani.
According to them, Kuoomo is the face that can become an “anti-mamdani” option by adding middle and dissatisfied Democrat voters.
