Road accidents are common in Nepal due to narrow roads and poor road maintenance in mountainous areas. There are 5 major reasons for the high number of accidents in Nepal. Hilly geography. Most of the parts of Nepal are hilly and inaccessible. There are deep ditches and slopes along the roads. Due to a slight mistake or bad weather, vehicles can easily slip off the road, hence road accidents occur more often. Bad and narrow roads: Roads in many areas of Nepal are narrow, winding and not properly developed. Many places do not even have safety walls or railings. This increases the risk of falling from the bus or car. Weather and Natural Disasters Nepal receives heavy rainfall during monsoon, leading to increased incidents of landslides and floods. Due to mudslides in the mountains, roads get damaged and vehicles become victims of accidents. Earthquakes and Geological Activity Nepal falls in an earthquake sensitive area. Instability of the ground and hilly slopes also increase the chances of accidents. Limitations of the transport system Sometimes trains are overloaded, vehicles are old or drivers do not have adequate training on difficult mountain roads. This further increases the risk of accidents. In simple words, mountains, bad roads, heavy rains and weak infrastructure together increase the number of accidents in Nepal.
