Balendra (Balen) Shah took oath as the Prime Minister of Nepal on Friday. 35 year old Balen became the youngest PM of the country. After taking oath as MP, he issued his first message through a rap song, in which he mentioned corruption, change in the system and youth. Balen’s party Rashtriya Swatra Party (RSP) had won the March 5 elections. Acting Prime Minister Sushila Karki said that the future of the country is now in the hands of the youth and the new government is expected to end corruption. The formation of the cabinet in the new government has also started. Sudhan Gurung has been made the Home Minister, who will be responsible for the internal security and law and order of the country. Shishir Khanal has been given the post of Foreign Minister, who will handle Nepal’s diplomacy and international relations. But his real identity came in 2013, when he suddenly gained popularity by winning a famous rap battle of Nepal. After becoming popular by singing songs against corruption, Balen released many songs, in which there was a sharp attack on corruption and social inequality. His different look also became recognizable, black square glasses, black blazer and black pants. His song ‘Balidan’ became very popular and was viewed more than 14 million times on YouTube. Independent won mayor election. His entry into politics took place in 2022, when he contested the Kathmandu Mayor election as an independent candidate and won with a huge majority. He defeated the traditional parties which had been in power for a long time. Balen becoming the mayor of Kathmandu was a big deal because it is not just a city post, but is considered the most important urban post in Nepalese politics. Kathmandu is the capital of the country, from where the government runs, major decisions are taken and this city is also the identity of Nepal at the international level. This is the reason why the status of the Mayor of Kathmandu in Nepal is considered higher than that of many Union Ministers. In such a situation, Balen’s independent victory was discussed not only in Nepal but in the whole world. Balen became the face of opposition in GenZ Protest. After becoming mayor, he took steps like cleaning the city, heritage conservation and strictness against corruption. The crackdown on illegal construction led to improvements in traffic, although the campaign also faced opposition, particularly from roadside vendors and slum dwellers. Balen Shah’s influence was not limited to administration only. His songs resonated among the youth during the protests held in September last year. 77 people died in these protests and the reason behind this was people’s anger over the ban on social media, unemployment, corruption and slow economy. The protesters made his song ‘Nepal Hanseko’ a kind of symbol. Even in the race for the post of Prime Minister, Balen adopted a different strategy from the traditional campaign. He stayed away from the media and did not give many interviews. Critics called it an attempt to avoid transparency, but Balen communicated directly with people through social media. He made promises like strict action on corruption, reform in the justice system and providing 12 lakh jobs. His strategy was successful and his party won a big victory in the general elections held on March 5, which dealt a big blow to Nepal’s traditional politics. Balen Shah proved his political strength by defeating former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli from Jhapa-5 seat. By assuming the post of Prime Minister at the age of 35, he has become the youngest Prime Minister of Nepal.
