On Monday, 7 people died and 4 were injured when an ice mountain collapsed on a peak named Yalung Ri in the north-eastern part of Nepal.

The accident occurred when an avalanche reached the base camp of the 5,630 meter high peak. 4 people are missing after the accident.

The dead include 3 Americans, 1 Canadian, 1 Italian and 2 Nepalese nationals. This information has been given by the police of Dolakha district. This area falls in the Rolwaling Valley of Bagmati province.

Police and rescue teams are still searching for the missing people.

Rescue delayed due to bad weather

According to Nepali website Himalayan Times, this accident happened at around 9 am. A team of 15 people was moving towards Gaurishankar and Yalung Ri. During this time, avalanche caught them near the base camp.

Local ward president Ninggeli Sherpa said that since the morning the administration was informed several times for help, but the rescue operation started late. He said that due to the rollwalling area being a restricted area, there was a delay in getting permission for the helicopter to take off, which further slowed down the rescue operation.

According to police, Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed in search and rescue operations. A helicopter was also sent, but due to bad weather it could not reach the accident site.
