नेपाल में ओली-प्रचंड और देऊबा की पार्टियों में गठबंधन संभव: सीट बंटवारे और स्ट्रैटजी पर बातचीत जारी; 20 दिन बाद राष्ट्रीय सभा का चुनाव

Nepali has three former PMs Sher Bahadur Deuba, K. The parties of P. Sharma Oli and Pushp Kamal Dahal Prachanda are preparing for an alliance. Elections for the ‘Rashtriya Sabha’, the upper house of the Parliament, are to be held in Nepal on 25 January. Consideration is being made to include the party of Madhes region in this alliance.

According to Nepali newspaper The Kathmandu Post, seat sharing and common strategy are being discussed between Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party and Janata Samajwadi Party. This election is to be held on 25 January.

There are a total of 59 members in the National Assembly. One-third of these members retire every two years. This time the tenure of 18 members is ending on March 4. Elections will be held to fill these vacant seats.

Initial talks have revealed that Congress may get 7 seats, UML may get 6 seats, Nepali Communist Party may get 4 seats and Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal may get 1 seat.

Candidates have to file nomination by January 7

According to Congress leaders, the party can decide the names of its candidates by Tuesday. On Monday evening, senior Congress leaders Purna Bahadur Khadka, Ramesh Writer and Krishna Prasad Sitaula met UML President KP Sharma Oli and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel.

Seat distribution was discussed in this meeting. UML has also called a meeting of the party secretariat on Tuesday to decide its candidates. According to the election schedule, all the candidates will have to file nominations on Wednesday i.e. 7th January.

There are a total of 59 members in the National Assembly. Of these, 56 members are elected through elections, while 3 members are nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government. At least one of these nominated members must be a woman.

Talks continue for general elections also

In the meeting of the Central Working Committee of the Congress, Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka said that the political forces involved in making the Constitution have agreed to unite for the National Assembly elections.

Khadka, on behalf of Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, had earlier also talked to KP Sharma Oli about alliance. Although discussions are going on for an alliance between Congress and UML for the upcoming parliamentary elections, no final decision has been taken yet.

General elections are going to be held in Nepal on 5 March 2026. On this day the citizens of the country will vote for the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Parliament, in which a total of 275 members are elected.

Most KP Oli party members will retire

According to the records of the Parliamentary Secretariat, in March, the maximum number of members will retire from the UML party i.e. KP Sharmi Oli’s party. The tenure of 8 members of UML will be completed. After this, 7 members of the former Maoist Center associated with Nepali Communist Party will retire in the next four years. The tenure of members of the National Assembly is 6 years.

In March, one member each from CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party will also retire. At the same time, the tenure of any member of Nepali Congress is not ending, even though it is the second largest party in the Upper House.

Elections will be held for 18 out of 19 seats in the National Assembly, while one member will be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government. According to the Constitution, the National Assembly is the permanent house of the Parliament. The lower house i.e. the House of Representatives was dissolved on 12 September.
