Naravane signed the novel ‘The Cantonment Conspiracy’ in Pune.

Former Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane said that he is now focusing only on writing fiction. He said- I have been writing for army reports and academic journals earlier also, now I am writing only fiction.

Naravane spoke to ANI on Friday during the book-signing event of his novel ‘The Containment Conspiracy: A Military Thriller’ in Pune. He said that one of my short stories has also been published in the magazine Femina.

He said that my first novel has been published by Penguin House India. Its story revolves around two young officers from NDA. Naravane did not comment on his unpublished memoir ‘Four Stars of Destiny’.

In fact, during the motion of thanks on the President’s address on the budget session, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had quoted the article of the memoir. After which there was a huge uproar.

Copies of the novel 'The Containment Conspiracy: A Military Thriller' kept at a book stall in Pune.

Navrane said- had no intention of writing a memoir

Naravane had told in an interview that he had no intention of writing a memoir. He told that at the launch of a book on Bipin Rawat, he had a joking conversation with the publisher, after which he got an offer to write the book and this journey started from here.

Political turmoil over Naravane’s memoir ‘Four Stars of Destiny’

In the Lok Sabha on 2-3 February, Rahul Gandhi had tried to read an article published in a magazine. He had claimed that it contained excerpts from Naravane’s book. Speaker Om Birla did not allow this.

After this there was an uproar in the Lok Sabha, due to which the proceedings were adjourned. Eight MPs who created ruckus were suspended.

Rahul claimed that the article was from Naravane’s memoir Four Stars of Destiny. In this, questions have been raised on the government’s policy in the India-China border dispute of 2020.

Rahul had alleged that the government’s response was delayed and later Prime Minister Modi had left the responsibility of the decision to Naravane. However, this memoir has not been published yet and is awaiting government approval from 2023.

Defense Minister had said that unpublished book cannot be quoted

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had objected to Rahul’s statement. It was said that a book which has not yet been published cannot be quoted in the House because it is not ‘authenticated’.

This issue was heated during the motion of thanks on the President’s address. The opposition had also brought a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla in protest against the Speaker stopping Rahul Gandhi from speaking, but it was defeated by voice vote.

Congress shares pages of book, events at the time of Chinese tank intrusion

Congress had shared pages of an article published in a magazine on social media. It contains excerpts from the former Army Chief’s unpublished book Four Stars of Destiny. It mentions the situation between India and China on the Ladakh border on 31 August 2020. Told what happened when Chinese tanks were advancing in Eastern Ladakh?

Date: August 31, 2020

8.15 pm: Lieutenant General Yogesh Joshi, chief of the Indian Army’s Northern Command, received information over the phone that four Chinese tanks with Chinese infantry support were advancing on a steep mountain trail leading to Rechin La in eastern Ladakh.

Between 8.15–8.30 pm: Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Lieutenant General Yogesh Joshi immediately informed Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane. The Chinese tanks were a few hundred meters away from Indian positions on the Kailash Range. After this, Indian soldiers fired a light shell as a warning, but it had no effect on the Chinese tanks and they continued moving forward.

After 8.30 pm: Army Chief Naravane met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat and Foreign Minister S. Contacted Jaishankar and asked for clear instructions.

9.10 pm: Lieutenant General Yogesh Joshi called again. It was told that Chinese tanks are now less than a kilometer away from the pass.

9.25 pm: Army chief Naravane again called Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and sought “clear instructions”, but no decision was received. Meanwhile, a message from PLA commander Major General Liu Lin came, proposing to reduce tensions—both sides should stop further activities and a meeting of local commanders should be held at 9.30 am the next day.

10.00 pm: Naravane took the Chinese commander’s proposal to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval.

10.10 pm: Information was again received from the Northern Command that the Chinese tanks had not stopped and were now just 500 meters away from the peak. Joshi told that the only way to stop them is to open fire with medium artillery.

Between 10.10 pm – 10.30 pm: Options continued to be discussed in the army headquarters. The entire Northern Front was put on high alert.

10.30 pm: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh called back and said that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister’s instructions were in just one sentence – do whatever you deem appropriate. Naravane said, ‘This was going to be a completely military decision. Modi was consulted. He was briefed, but refused to take a decision. Now the entire responsibility was on me.

Naravane was the Army Chief from 2019 to 2022.

Naravane has been the Army Chief from 2019 to 2022. He had told in the Khushwant Singh Literature Festival organized in Kasauli last year that he has given his book to Penguin Publisher Group for publishing.

Now this is a matter between the publishers and the government. The book has been sent to the Defense Ministry for approval. It has been more than a year, but approval to publish it has not been received.
