The 56th International Film Festival of India is being organized in Panaji, Goa. Bollywood’s famous casting director Mukesh Chhabra has also taken part in this 9-day long event.
In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Mukesh talked about the casting of his upcoming films ‘Dhurandhar’, ‘King’, ‘Tere Ishq Mein’. Apart from this, he also told about his relationship with stars like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Read the main excerpt of the interview…
You have done the casting of Dhurandhar, Tere Ishq Mein, The Family Man-3 and all these are very popular. What will you say?
It’s a very good feeling. The feeling that came after ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Dangal’, ‘Kai Po Che’, ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, I am feeling exactly the same right now. But there was even more explosion in this. People will forget all the casting I have done till date after ‘Dhurandhar’. People will only remember ‘Dhurandhar’.
I really enjoyed being associated with this film. One and a half years of my life has been spent in the casting of this film. I had to think about every actor. Be it the role of Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Akshay Khanna or the new girl Sara Arjun. Also, there are many more new faces, I have worked hard on casting everyone. Also enjoyed a lot.
Dhanush and Kriti Sanon’s film ‘Tere Ishq Mein’ is making a lot of headlines. How do you see it?
I wanted Aanand L Rai of ‘Raanjhanaa’ back. I think he has come back in love with you. When you watch the film you will see how much hard work went into it. Aanand L Rai’s film making has its own style, which was probably lost somewhere. He will come back after ‘Tere Ishq’.
Had casted his ‘Dangal’ and ‘Kai Po Che’. Even today there are talks about these two castings.
You are right…I still get love for ‘Dangal’ till today. The casting of ‘Dangal’ also created some noise in this country.
It was during the casting of ‘Kai Po Che’ that I became friends with Sushant, Rajkumar Rao and Amit Sadh. All four of us became very good friends. All the people I selected have achieved good positions in their careers. I want whoever joins me to become a star.
You have cast Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and almost all the big stars. Your relationships with all of them are very strong.
I think if you love your work, relationships are formed through work. Then if you respect relationships then relationships do not go anywhere. Be it my team members or big stars, everyone is like family to me. Shahrukh always meets me with great warmth. I have done so much work with him. He has seen me since childhood. It feels good when work is appreciated.
My assistant is like a brother to me. My relationship with Shahrukh, Salman and Akshay Bhai is now 18 years old. If you do your work well, your relationships will be maintained.
Tell us something about the casting of Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘King’?
The teaser itself was enough to bring ‘King’ into the buzz. That teaser itself has said a lot about the film.
During your two decade long career, is there any compliment that is very special to you?
There are one or two actors whose families messaged me thanking them. It was written in the message that son, thanks to you, my children will be able to survive and work in Mumbai. I like such compliments, in which someone’s parents have given me blessings.
