Another brave and great personality has left us. He has left this stage, leaving behind a silence whose sound is unbearable. Dharam ji, he was an epitome of greatness, not only because of his famous personality, but also for his big heart and his simplicity. He brought with him the earthy flavor of the Punjab village he came from and maintained that simplicity and temperament throughout his illustrious career.

A lot has changed in the film world over the decades, but they have not changed. Whoever came near him could not help but be impressed by his smile, his charm and his cordiality. This is very rare in this profession. The air around us now seems empty. A void has been created, which will always remain empty. Prayers.

During this time he was kept in ventilator. The news of his demise also appeared in the media, which was denied by the family. On November 12, Dharmendra was discharged from the hospital and the doctors advised him to undergo further treatment at home.

A look at Dharmendra’s film journey-

Dharmendra’s story starts from 1935…

Dharmendra was born on 8 December 1935 to Kewal Kishan Deol, headmaster of village Sahnewal in Punjab, British India. Who was given the name Dharam Kewal Kishan. Dharmendra’s childhood was spent in Sahnewal in a Punjabi Jat family. Dharmendra studied at the Government Senior Secondary School where his father was the headmaster. When Dharmendra was in tenth class, he saw Dilip Kumar’s film ‘Shaheed’. He liked the film so much that he decided to become a hero himself.

Dharmendra was only 19 years old when his father got him married to Prakash Kaur in 1954. At the same time, one day I read an advertisement in the newspaper for a talent hunt competition by Filmfare Magazine. The winner was going to get work in films. He was newly married, so it was difficult for him to leave his wife and go to Mumbai, but he convinced his family.

Dharmendra with first wife Prakash Kaur. From this marriage he has 4 children Sunny, Bobby, Ajeta, Vijeta.

Dharmendra reached Bombay (now Mumbai) with a few rupees and won the competition by defeating youth from all over the country. According to the condition, the film was to be given to the winner Dharmendra, but no film was made with him. To become a hero, Dharmendra stayed in Bombay and found a job to survive. He worked in a drilling firm where his salary was Rs 200. Along with his job, he used to visit the offices of many producers.

Sometimes he used to get a full meal with a modest salary, and sometimes he used to sleep on an empty stomach. Similarly, one day when Dharmendra returned from work, he started feeling faint due to hunger. There was neither food nor money in the house. While suffering from hunger, Dharmendra’s eyes fell on the Isabgol packet lying on the table. He couldn’t think of anything and dissolved the entire packet in a glass of water and swallowed it. The hunger was satisfied for a few minutes, but after that Isabgol started her work. Isabgol was generally used to relieve constipation or for digestion. Dharmendra started having severe stomach pain and started having diarrhea. After waiting for a few hours, his room partner took him seriously and took him to the hospital. When the whole situation was told to the doctor, the doctor laughed and said that he does not need any medicine.

While struggling during this period of crisis, he got director Arjun Hingorani’s film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. He got only Rs 51 for this film. He lived in the garage of Arjun Hingorani. After some time the shooting of the film started. While the shooting was going on, Dharmendra developed jaundice. He lost weight and when shooting started again after recovery, his face had shriveled.

In an interview given to NDTV, Dharmendra told that when he reached the premiere of the film, he was not able to recognize his own face. Disappointed with his looks, he could not watch even half of the film and left the theatre. They thought that no one would like them, but the opposite happened.

The film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tera, released in 1960, was a huge hit and Dharmendra got recognition across the country from the very first film. As soon as Dharmendra gained popularity, he started getting many hit films like Surat Aur Seerat (1962), Anpadh (1962), Bandini (1963), Aayi Milan Ki Bela (1964), Baharen Phir Aayengi (1966), Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966), Dulhan Ek Raat Ki (1967). Thanks to these films, he got the status of romantic hero in the 60s.

The hero named Dharmendra had made a name for himself in the film industry, but he was yet to get the status of star. Meena Kumari did this work. They were seen together in the 1964 film ‘Main Bhi Ladki Hoon’. Meena Kumari started liking Dharmendra from the very first film. At that time there was a rift in the relationship between Meena and her husband Kamal Amrohi. Meena Kumari used to put a condition before her producers that she would become the heroine of the film only when Dharmendra would be the hero of the film.

To cast a big actress like Meena Kumari, filmmakers used to accept every condition of her. Dharmendra and Meena Kumari were seen together in the films Purnima, Kajal, Manjali Didi, Baharon Ki Manzil and Phool Aur Patthar and Dharmendra got star status.
