Bollywood comedian Asrani passed away in Mumbai. His life has been an example of struggle, dedication and deep passion for art. His real name was Govardhan Asrani. He belonged to a middle class Sindhi family. His father settled in Jaipur from Pakistan after the partition of India.

Asrani was the fourth among four sisters and three brothers. Asrani was not interested in business since childhood. He was weak in mathematics, but had a keen interest in acting and voice. He completed his schooling from St. Xavier’s School, Jaipur and graduated from Rajasthan College. Along with his studies, he worked as a voice artist in All India Radio, Jaipur so that he could bear the expenses of his studies.

Asrani was famous among his friends by the name ‘Chonch’. Like every parent, Asrani’s father also wanted him to get a good education and do a government job, but Asrani had already dreamed of becoming an actor. His father had never given him permission for this.

Friends had given money to Asrani to go to Mumbai.

Was associated with radio since childhood Asrani was associated with radio in Jaipur since childhood. After completing his studies, he also worked as a radio artist for many years. When he decided to go to Mumbai, his theater friends in Jaipur helped him by staging two plays – “Julius Caesar” and “Ab Ke Moy Ubaro”. Whatever little money was earned from the tickets of these two plays was given to Asrani to go to Mumbai. Just seeing the opportunity, one day Asrani ran away from his home and reached Mumbai.

The path of acting started from Jaipur itself. Asrani started his acting career with Jaipur theatre. From 1960 to 1962, Asrani learned the nuances of acting from Sahitya Kalabhai Thakor. It was from here that he decided that acting would be his life. In 1962, he reached Mumbai with big dreams and started looking for opportunities in films.

After meeting the famous director Hrishikesh Mukherjee in 1963, Asrani was advised to take formal education in acting. After this he took admission in the Film Institute, Pune in 1964. Completed acting course in 1966. Here his acting skills impressed everyone. In 1967, Asrani started his career with a Gujarati film opposite the new heroine Waheeda.

Senior theater workers said that Asrani, who came from the streets of Jaipur, made a mark in Bollywood with his hard work and dedication, which is remembered even today. His art, simplicity and humility not only made him a successful artist but also made him the face of comedy in the world of cinema. Jaipur artists say that Asrani was not just the identity of Bollywood but of Jaipur.

On Jaipur’s MI Road, Asrani was sitting on the pole in front of the bicycle with his friend, hanging one leg over the handle and talking merrily. Then, as soon as he reached a government motor garage located on the same road, where Ganpati Plaza is now, he signaled and asked his friend to stop the bicycle.

After getting down from the bicycle, he stopped near a hoarding in front. On it was the poster of the film ‘Meherbaan’ released in the same year. Pointing towards the hoarding, Asrani said to his friend – Are you looking at this? Someday I too will have a similar poster. The friend said- Yes brother, yours will also be done soon. Don’t worry.

A few months later, in the same year, the poster of the film ‘Hare Kanch Ki Chudiyan’ was put up on the same hoarding, in which Asrani’s photo was also printed in one corner along with actors like Biswajeet, Naina Sahu, Shiv Kumar, Helen and Rajendra Nath. Actually Asrani could not stay in Jaipur for long and came back to Mumbai.

When he did not get work in Mumbai, he returned to Pune Film Institute and became an acting teacher. Later, after a lot of struggles, work gradually started coming. Asrani had become an actor and his childhood cycling friend Madan Sharma later became a famous playwright and program executive at Jaipur Akashvani.

Jaipur comedian Ekesh Parth said- I got the opportunity to do stage shows with Asrani Sahab many times. Asrani ji was a very simple artist. He was full of humor. Despite being such a big comedian, he was always simple and always encouraged the new young artists and one of his words will always be remembered. He used to say that create humor from within yourself, for that one should connect with the common man and feel it.
