Road accidents have increased by 4.2% and deaths by 2.6% in 2023 compared to 2022.
This is not just news but an alert for parents who allow their children under 18 years of age to drive without a license.
9,489 children under the age of 18 died in road accidents during 2023, meaning the country lost 26 children every day. This is 5.49% of the total people who lost their lives in accidents throughout the year.
The sad part is that out of these, 2,537 children died while driving (without a license) i.e. about 7 ‘underage drivers’ lost their lives every day. In accidents, 4,242 children died as passengers, while 2,232 children were trampled on the roads while walking.
This picture emerged in the data collected for the Road Transport Ministry’s Road Accidents in India-2023 report. The report is going to be released soon. Bhaskar compiled these data from different states. According to these figures, 54,568 deaths occurred due to not wearing helmet in 2023.
Number of child deaths in 2023 will be less than 2022
The number of deaths of children in road accidents is 39 less than in 2022. During 2022, 9,528 children lost their lives in road accidents. An average of 55 road accidents are still happening every hour in the country. 20 people are losing their lives in these.
Road accidents have increased by 4.2% and deaths by 2.6% in 2023 compared to 2022. The highest number of 13.7% deaths in the country occurred in UP and for the sixth consecutive year, Tamil Nadu remained number-1 in the number of road accidents. If we look at age-wise road accidents during the year 2023, maximum 66.4% deaths occurred in the age group of 18-45.
People under 35 years of age accounted for 50.5% of the total deaths. Of those killed in road accidents, 31.5% were urban and 68.5% were rural. 85.8% were male and 14.2% female.
Deaths due to road potholes increased by 16% in a year
- During 2023, 33,827 (7%) people who did not have a valid driving license died in road accidents across the country.
- 44,841 deaths (26%) in accidents occurred in vehicles that were older than 10 years.
- Amid government claims of repairing potholes on the roads, 2,161 people lost their lives in accidents during the year, which is 16.4% more than in the year 2022 (1,856).
- Overloaded vehicles caused 27,810 accidents, resulting in 12,154 deaths.
- During the year 2023, 68,783 cases of hit and run were recorded, in which 31,209 people lost their lives and 54,574 people were seriously injured.
- The maximum number of deaths due to accidents was 1,457 in Delhi. Bengaluru (915) is second, Jaipur (849) is third.
