The central government has issued an alert at all ports, airports in the country as well as on the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh amid the increasing cases of monkeypox across the world. The Union Health Ministry has asked officials to be vigilant about the symptoms of monkeypox in passengers coming from outside.
Official sources said that the Health Ministry has set up nodal centers in three major hospitals of the Center in Delhi – Ram Manohar Lohia, Safdarjung and Lady Harding. Isolation wards have been set up in these hospitals for the treatment and care of monkeypox patients.
The Centre has also directed all state governments to make necessary arrangements for monkeypox patients in their state hospitals. No case of monkeypox has been reported in India yet. Officials said that as per the assessment so far, the risk of large-scale spread of monkeypox is low.
Fourth case found in Pakistan occupied Kashmir
On the other hand, 4 cases of monkeypox have been reported so far in neighboring country Pakistan. On Monday (August 19), a suspected case was reported in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). The 47-year-old man has recently returned to Pakistan from Saudi Arabia.
He has been admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Earlier, three cases of monkeypox were reported in Pakistan. All were residents of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
What is Monkeypox
Monkeypox is a viral disease like smallpox. Infection with this virus usually does not have many side effects, but in some cases it can be fatal. It causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled sores on the body. This virus is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus family, which is also responsible for smallpox.
WHO declared monkeypox a health emergency
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global public health emergency on August 14. This is the second time in two years that the disease has been declared a health emergency.
According to the WHO report, this year 537 people have died due to monkeypox in the world. There is a fear that it may spread to other countries of the world. It started from the African country Congo. After this, it spread rapidly to neighboring countries.
Like Corona, it is spreading to other countries through air travel and other means of travel. Ten countries in Africa are seriously affected by it. WHO is also worried because different mortality rates have been observed in different outbreaks of monkeypox. Sometimes it has been more than 10%.
