Dharam ji’s demise is one of the saddest days for Indian cinema. This is not just the loss of Indian cinema. This is a personal loss for the Deol family, and also for people like me, who have been a part of that family. Dharam Paaji always treated me like a child. The Deol family has always been with me through good and bad times. Dharam Paaji, what can I say, I have no words to describe his greatness. Saying this, director Sameer Karnik becomes emotional.

Sameer says- I have rarely seen a person like Dharam Paaji in my life. He never judged anyone. It doesn’t matter whether it is new or old or what it is. He was a very kind-hearted person and he will always remain that way in our memories.

His heart was so big that even if someone made a mistake, he would never consider it wrong. His heart was so big that there was a place for everyone in it, everyone was allowed. He was one of the greatest people I had the privilege of meeting in my life.

A friend and father on the set

He worked with his two sons (Sunny and Bobby) in our film ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’. His character was more like a friend than a senior.

He made everyone feel comfortable. I said, he never considered himself ‘Dharmendra’. Such a big actor, star, superstar, no! He treated everyone equally, gave so much love to everyone. It was just love, always.

When you needed a father, he was there. When you needed a friend, he was there. When you needed to stand up for yourself, he was there. He was Dharmendra. Dharam Paaji was the same.

I will miss him very much, and he will always be with me. He is such an energy, such a force that if you fall, he used to motivate you, “Get up child, there is nothing right now, get up, you have to fight.” They have so much power.

It is said about him that as soon as the camera is on, his energy goes to a different level. I would say – whether the camera was on or off, his energy was always on.

His energy was infectious. Even if you were ever sad or down, meeting him made you feel up. He would light up the entire set as soon as he arrived. There was not a single person – in my unit, or in any of the units I served – who was not affected by his energy.

Sunny and Bobby are a bit shy, but Dharam sir was always full of energy. If you are having a bad day, meet him, your heart will become happy, your energy will come back.

Untouchable ease

Now what can I say about all these things! He was one of the most outstanding actors of Indian cinema. His spontaneity, his energy are untouchable.

Sometimes as a writer or director, I or it could be anyone else, if we get stuck somewhere, we would ask him, “Dharam ji, this is how to do it.” He would smile and say, “Kid, get the shot ready, I will do it.”

This was the experience, this was the spontaneity that he had as an actor.

Today this is not only a big loss for Indian cinema but also a big personal loss for me. I will always remember him.
