He further said that every day 1700 complaints of cyber crime are received. Out of these 700-800 calls are new. The problem of cyber crime has increased a lot in the last 18 months. In most of the cases people are falling prey to cyber fraud. Victims either fall prey to cyber criminals due to ignorance, fear or greed.

The DCP further said that on an average 55 thousand to 60 thousand calls are received every month on Delhi Police’s cyber helpline number 1930. Most of the calls are related to financial and other frauds. Out of the 700-800 cyber crime calls received every day, 200-250 calls are related to fraud.

Lost ₹22 crores in greed to double investment
In an interview given to PTI, the DCP said that usually cases of fraud with people happen due to their greed. For example, a person was subjected to a cyber fraud of Rs 22 crore. He suffered a loss in the greed of doubling his money in the name of investment.

Apart from this, other calls are related to sextortion, digital arrest, matrimonial website fraud and fraud on the pretext of providing work from home opportunities. Cyber ​​criminals send emails to people. People are intimidated by saying that they have been found scanning child pornography websites.

After this the game of fraud begins. Criminals threaten to defame people. They scare them with action by agencies like ED. The DCP said that after investigating many such cases, 180 arrests have been made.

Delhi Police investigates ₹500 crore fraud

The DCP said that Delhi Police has investigated financial frauds worth more than ₹500 crore since January this year. The IFSO unit is investigating frauds worth ₹200 crore. Our unit specifically investigates cases where the amount stolen is Rs 50 lakh or more.

Apart from IFSO, there is a cyber unit in every district. Cyber ​​criminals remain anonymous. There is less chance of them getting caught. For example, chain snatchers fear getting caught. Common thieves also fear getting caught, but cyber criminals remain anonymous. Their details are not even in the public domain.

The DCP said that cyber crime does not have the same social impact as other crimes. There is not much awareness about them.

Call helpline number 1930
The DCP said that the person who has become a victim of online fraud should call RBI’s helpline number 1930 as soon as possible. This increases the chances of recovering their money. Because the transaction can be blocked within 24 hours of the fraud.

He further said that if someone is unable to call 1930, then he should call the emergency number 112, from there the call is transferred to the 1930 helpline. If both the options are not available then the victim should immediately contact the nearest police station.
