Controversy has increased over the role of model and actress Poonam Pandey in Delhi’s famous Luv-Kush Ramlila. BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have objected to the decision of Lavkush Ramlila Committee.
Praveen Shankar Kapoor, head of Delhi BJP Media Cell and senior vice president of Lavkush Ramlila Committee, wrote a letter to the organizers saying that Poonam Pandey should be removed and another artist should be given a chance.
However, the committee made it clear that Poonam Pandey will play the role of Mandodari in Ramlila. Arjun Kumar, chairman of Lavkush Ramlila Committee, has said that Mandodari’s role will come on stage on September 29 and 30.
We are ready for the conversation but we do not consider it wrong. Poonam Pandey’s past may have been anything but we hope that playing the role of Mandodari in Ramlila will change her mind.
Poonam Pandey thanked him for his invitation to play Mandodari on behalf of Lavkush Ramlila Committee on social media. Mandodari’s husband Ravana will play actor Arya Babbar.
Committee said- Poonam is just one artist
Kumar said that Mandodari is an ideal character and any woman can play this role. Everyone should get a chance. This time more than 500 artists are participating in Ramlila, of which Poonam Pandey is also just one artist.
Surendra Gupta, the province secretary of VHP’s Delhi unit, said that Poonam Pandey is not right to play a religious role due to her controversial image and photos and videos uploaded on social media.
Sadhus and saints expressed protest
- National General Secretary of All India Sant Samiti Swami Jitendranand Saraswati said that we have an appeal to Ramlila committees to maintain decency. The background and conduct of the artists should be taken care of so that Ramlila’s reputation is not hurt.
- The Peethadhishwar Jagatguru child of Patalpuri Math, Devacharya said that Mandodari is one of the Panch girls, which is a symbol of dignity and purity. It is not appropriate to give this character to anyone. Computer Baba reacted sharply and said that Poonam Pandey should play the role of Shurpanakha, not Mandodari. Ramlila is based on Sanatan Dharma and it is necessary to respect it.
- Mahamandaleshwar Shaileshanand Maharaj said that there is a difference in pictures and character. If Poonam Pandey plays Mandodari and studies the Ramayana, then there may be spiritual change in her life. If an artist plays a mythical character, it is welcome.
Lavkush Ramlila of Delhi is famous all over the country for its grand and modern performance. It consists of a large number of spectators, especially young,. Therefore, the selection of Poonam Pandey has launched discussion from social media to political corridors.
