The bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan will hear 5 petitions in the Supreme Court today on the Tirupati laddu controversy.

The matter of animal fat being used in prasadam (laddus) in Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple (Tirupati Temple) of Andhra Pradesh will be heard in the Supreme Court today. The bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan will hear 5 petitions.

Two of these main petitions have been filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) president YV Subba Reddy. Another petition was filed by advocate Satyam Singh. The court will hear all the petitions together.

The petition on behalf of former TTD president YV Subba Reddy said that Chandrababu Naidu’s party TDP deliberately released the documents to create confusion among the devotees. The petition emphasizes the importance of protecting temple traditions, as making laddus as prasad is a religious practice protected under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.

Petitioner Subramaniam Swamy asked 5 questions in the petition…

  • In the petition filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, Swamy has asked five questions.
  • Was the ghee sample taken from the ghee used in Prasad or from the rejected ghee lot?
  • Who sent ghee for Prasad? Which supplier was involved in the purchase of adulterated ghee?
  • Were any false facts presented in the investigation report? Is there room for error?
  • Did the temple committee examine the ghee? If so then when was ghee purchased after that?
  • The temple committee should issue a report regarding irregularities in the temple offerings. What permission does a political party have?

How did this controversy come to light… Karnataka Cooperative Milk Federation (KMF) was supplying ghee to the trust at concessional rates for the last 50 years. 1400 tonnes of ghee is used in Tirupati temple every six months. In July 2023, the company refused to supply at a lower rate, after which the Jagan government (YSRCP) gave the work of supply to 5 firms. One of these is AR Dairy Foods based in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. A defect was found in its product in July this year.

TDP government came, sample tested in July, fat confirmed The TDP government had appointed senior IAS officer J Shyamala Rao as the new executive officer of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in June 2024.

He ordered to check the quality of Prasadam (Laddus). A committee was formed for this. The committee gave many suggestions to improve the taste and quality of Prasad. Also sent samples of ghee to National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Gujarat for testing. Fat was mentioned in the report that came out in July.

After this, TTD returned the stock of ghee sent by AR Dairy Foods based in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu and blacklisted the contractor. After this TTD started purchasing ghee from Karnataka Milk Federation.

Ghee was purchased from the old supplier at the rate of Rs 320 per kg. Now Tirupati Trust is purchasing ghee from Karnataka Cooperative Milk Federation (KMF) at the rate of Rs 475 per kg.

NDDB CALF (Anand, Gujarat), a laboratory that tests the purity of ghee, has agreed to donate a machine to Tirupati to test the purity of ghee. Its cost is Rs 75 lakh.

CM Naidu made lab report public, controversy increased The report that came out in July had confirmed the presence of fat in the laddus. However, TDP made the report public after two months. CM Naidu had alleged on September 18 that during the former Jagan government, animal fat and fish oil was mixed in the ghee used for laddus in Tirupati temple. TDP also claimed to have confirmed its allegations by showing a lab report.

Naidu said, when ghee was available in the market at Rs 500 per kg, the Jagan government sold it at Rs 320. Bought kilo of ghee. In such a situation, the ghee must have been adulterated by the supplier. There will be an investigation into the purchase of low priced ghee by the Jagan government. The sanctity of Tirupati temple has been tainted by the laddus made from ghee containing animal fat.
