US President Donald Trump has again said that India is now gradually reducing the purchase of oil from Russia and will almost eliminate it by the end of the year. He said that PM Modi himself has given him this assurance.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said, “Buying oil is a process that is not possible to stop immediately, but by the end of the year they will reduce it to zero. Just yesterday I had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi about this. It is a big deal, it is almost 40 percent oil.”
This is the fourth time in the last one week that the US President has raised the issue of Russian oil purchases.
When did Trump make such statements before?
- 15 October: I spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. He assured me that India will not buy oil from Russia, this is a big step.
- 17 October: India will not buy oil from Russia, they used to buy 38% earlier and are now ‘pulling back’.
- 19 October: I spoke to Prime Minister Modi and he said that he will not import oil from Russia. If they want to say that it didn’t happen, they will have to pay huge tariffs and they won’t have to do that.
Trump said- India-China came closer because of Obama-Biden
Referring to China further, Trump said, “Relations between Russia and China have never been very good historically, but because of the policies of Biden and Obama, the two countries have now come closer to each other. They should not have come so close.”
