Colombia has decided to bring back illegal immigrants deported from America to the country. Colombia will send a plane to the Central American country of Honduras to bring back its citizens. Earlier, Colombia had not allowed two American military planes carrying illegal immigrants to land in the country.

After this, US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced the imposition of 25% tariff and sanctions against Colombia. Also threatened to impose 50% tariff from next week.

In response to Trump’s actions, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro accused Trump of not treating migrants respectfully in a social media post. Also announced a 25% increase in tariffs on American goods.

This created a situation like tariff war between the two countries. However, Colombia later withdrew from its decision. President Petro, citing the honorable return of deported Colombian citizens, decided to send the presidential plane to bring them back.

Since becoming President, Donald Trump has started the effort to expel illegal immigrants from the country.

475 flights reached Colombia since 2020

475 flights carrying illegal immigrants arrived from America from 2020 to 2024. Colombia ranks fifth in receiving return flights carrying illegal immigrants. Ahead of Colombia were Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador.

Since 2024, 124 flights have reached Colombia carrying illegal immigrants. In the last few years, a large number of Colombian citizens have reached the US-Mexico border. In the last one year, 1.27 lakh citizens of Colombia were arrested by America on charges of illegal entry.

After Mexico, Guatemala and Venezuela, the highest number of illegal immigrants from Colombia were caught from the US border.

Trump’s decisions impact trade deficit

Donald Trump wants to reduce America’s trade deficit with Colombia. However, imposing sanctions on Colombia may harm their plans. Currently, America’s trade deficit with Colombia is $1.4 billion.

Colombia sends 2 lakh barrels of crude oil to America every day. The US also exports coal, coffee and gold from Colombia. Additionally, Colombia is the largest supplier of fresh flowers to the United States. This American decision, taken just a few weeks before Valentine’s Day, may have an impact on the prices of flowers.
