India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the Russian capital Moscow on Tuesday. During the meeting, Jaishankar said that India-Russia relations have been a reason for stability in international relations for a long time.
Jaishankar said- The development of India and Russia is not only in the mutual interest of both the countries, but it is also in the interest of the world. The External Affairs Minister said that several bilateral agreements, projects and new initiatives between the two countries are in the final stages, which will further strengthen the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’.
Jaishankar’s statement is being seen as a direct message from India to US President Donald Trump. In August this year, Trump had imposed 50% tariff on India for purchasing crude oil from Russia. However, India has continued to buy oil from Russia despite Trump’s repeated objections.
Jaishankar said- discussion on new agreements in the final stage in both the countries
During the meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, Jaishankar said that new agreements and projects between the two countries in many areas including energy, trade, investment, space, science and defense are in the final stages of discussion. The two countries are also openly discussing complex global situations, such as the Ukraine conflict, the situation in West Asia and Afghanistan.
Let us tell you that Jaishankar is on Moscow tour in preparation for the 23rd annual India-Russia summit between PM Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin to be held in New Delhi next month. He will lead India at the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on November 18. Russian PM Mikhail Mishustin will host it.
Trump said – will reduce tariffs on reduction in oil imports from Russia
Donald Trump had said on November 17 that the US could reduce tariffs on India as it cut its oil imports from Russia. Trump said- India and America are close to finalizing a new trade agreement. Now India has greatly reduced the purchase of Russian oil, so America will gradually reduce the tariff.
Trump’s statement came after a Bloomberg report, which claimed that India has made a major cut in the purchase of crude oil from Russia for delivery in December. According to the report, 5 major refinery companies of the country have not placed any new orders for December.
Reliance, BPCL, HPCL did not give oil orders to Russia
Reliance Industries, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, Mangalore Refinery and HPCL-Mittal Energy did not place new orders to Russia for December. These companies have accounted for two-thirds of India’s Russian imports so far this year.
Only Indian Oil (IOC) and Nayara Energy are buying Russian oil for December. IOC is buying from non-sanctioned suppliers, while Nayara, in which Russia’s Rosneft has a 49% stake, is completely dependent on Russian supplies.
India became the second largest buyer of Russian oil in October
India bought crude oil worth $ 2.5 billion (about Rs 22.17 thousand crore) from Russia in October, making it the world’s second largest buyer. This information has been given by the Helsinki-based Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) in its report.
According to CREA, China stood first with imports worth 3.7 billion dollars (about Rs 32.82 thousand crores). Overall, India’s fossil fuel imports from Russia have reached $3.1 billion (about ₹27.49 thousand crore).
At the same time, China’s total figure was 5.8 billion dollars (about ₹ 51.44 thousand crores). China also remained the largest buyer of Russian coal. It bought coal worth $760 million. At the same time, India imported Russian coal worth $351 million and oil products worth $222 million in October.
50% tariff on India for buying oil from Russia 25% Penalty
Trump has imposed a total of 50% tariff on India so far. There is a 25% reciprocal i.e. tit-for-tat tariff and a 25% penalty on purchasing oil from Russia. The reciprocal tariff came into effect from August 7 and the penalty from August 27.
America has imposed economic sanctions on India to put pressure on Russia. Trump has many times claimed that Russia promotes war in Ukraine with the money received from India’s oil purchases.
