Police say a total of 54 charges have been filed against Dhaliwal and six others.
6 people of Indian origin have been arrested in Canada. They are accused of running an extortion racket. A woman is also among those arrested. Apart from this, a warrant has also been issued for the arrest of the seventh person.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested them on July 25 in a raid at six locations in Edmonton. More than 100 police were involved in this. The arrested people have been identified as Maninder Singh Dhaliwal (34), Jashandeep Kaur (19), Gurkaran Singh (19), Manav Heer (19), Parminder Singh (21) and Divnoor Asht (19) and a 17-year-old minor.
According to reports, these people used to run their racket by targeting Asian businessmen. According to media reports, all these people are from Punjab.
40 cases of extortion in the city after October
According to the police, Maninder Singh Dhaliwal is the kingpin of this group and is absconding. He used to recruit more people in the group and make plans related to extortion. The police suspect that he has changed his appearance.
A total of 54 charges have been leveled against these seven accused. These include charges like extortion, arson, intentionally setting fire, vandalism, breaking into people’s homes, attacking with weapons.
Edmonton police are investigating the men’s links to 40 extortion incidents since October last year. Charges have been filed in 26 of those incidents.
The most recent incident was on Friday when an apartment was set on fire during an extortion attempt in Edmonton. Several houses have been set on fire in the city before this. Therefore, the police have named it Project Gaslight.
