What is the matter?
After completion of Round-2 of NEET-PG counselling, a large number of PG medical seats are still lying vacant in different states, government medical colleges and private medical colleges. The main objective of NEET-PG and the subsequent counseling process is to ensure proper utilization of available postgraduate medical seats.
The results of NEET-PG 2025 were originally declared on August 19, 2025. Subsequently, in a letter dated January 9, 2026, the Health Ministry approved the reduction in the minimum qualifying percentile. After this, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has officially revised the NEET-PG 2025 qualifying cut-off following the instructions of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This decision will be applicable to the candidates participating in the third round of counseling for the 2025-26 academic session.
What is the new cut-off?
In the new cut-off update, the qualifying percentile for general category and EWS candidates has been reduced from 50th to 7th percentile. Apart from this, the benchmark for Disabled General Category (PwBD) has been reduced from 45th to 5th percentile. Similarly, for SC, ST and OBC candidates, the percentile has been reduced from 40 to 0, with the respective cut-off score fixed at -40 out of 800 (due to negative marking). How is admission in NEET?
Actually, to become doctors, study is done in two parts. First of all, NEET-UG exam has to be given, after that candidates study MBBS. After this, people give NEET PG exam for specialization, after passing it, there is three more years of study. In such a situation, the issue of minus-40 number is related to NEET PG exam.
Will those with minus 40 marks really get admission?
This time the seats were increased by the government, but due to not getting a nearby college or not getting the desired department for specialization, many seats remained vacant. Now the cut-off for taking admission has been reduced, but generally these are vacant seats where very few people want to take admission. In such a situation, you do not need more marks to fill those seats and the reserved category candidates who have got marks up to -40 will also get admission.
