Doctors are angry after two accused were granted bail in the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJPD) will start a 10-day protest in Kolkata from Tuesday, December 17, regarding the CBI investigation.
WBJPD, composed of five associations, will hold a dharna at Dorena crossing till December 26. WBJPD has demanded the CBI to file a supplementary chargesheet and has sought permission from Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma to hold the protest.
On December 13, Sealdah Court had granted bail to accused former principal Sandeep Ghosh and former in-charge of Tala police station Abhijeet Mandal. CBI was not able to file the charge sheet within the stipulated time of 90 days. Therefore both were granted bail. Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence and Mandal is accused of delaying filing the FIR.
Sandeep Ghosh will not be able to come out of jail yet, he has not got bail in the financial fraud case.
RG Kar trainee doctor rape-murder case, in 3 points
- The body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found on the morning of August 9 in the seminar hall of the emergency building of RG Kar Hospital. She was on night duty. The doctor was bleeding from his private parts, eyes and mouth. His neck bone was also found broken.
- A headphone was found near the doctor’s body. The police had arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer working in Kolkata Police, in this case on August 10. Sanjay was seen entering the emergency building in the CCTV camera. Then he had headphones around his neck. However, he did not have headphones around his neck while leaving the building.
- Initially the hospital management tried to call the incident a suicide. The role of Principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh in this was doubtful. Apart from Sandeep Ghosh, CBI arrested Dr. Debashish Som and Dr. Sujata Ghosh on charges of financial irregularities and corruption in the hospital. Polygraph test of Sandeep Ghosh was also conducted in September.
Doctors fasted for their demands
- Junior doctors went on strike for 42 days from August 10 to September 21 against the rape-murder incident. The doctors had earlier placed 5 demands before the government. Of these, the government accepted 3 demands. CM Mamata had assured to consider two other demands and conditions.
- After this the doctors ended the strike. He had returned to work in hospitals. On 27 September, a case of beating of 3 doctors and 3 nurses came to light in Sagor Dutta Hospital, due to which the doctors got angry and started the strike again on 1 October.
- From October 5, junior doctors had gone on a fast unto death for their 9 demands. 50 senior doctors had resigned from RG Kar Medical College in support of the junior doctors who were fasting.
