The protest against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College turned violent on Thursday night. The protest was being held here on Thursday night under the name ‘Reclaim the Night’. Meanwhile, a large number of people broke the police barricades outside the college and entered the college.

First, the mob vandalized police vehicles. After this, the mob entered the emergency ward of the hospital and damaged property there too. The police was unable to control the mob as the police force present there was less in number than the crowd. Hence, the police lathicharged the rioters and fired tear gas.

Police commissioner said- this happened due to wrong media campaign
Regarding this violent protest, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said that whatever happened here is due to a wrong media campaign. This malicious campaign was being run against the Kolkata Police. What did the Kolkata Police not do? We have made every possible effort in this case… We have tried to satisfy the family, but rumors are being spread against us.

He said that I am very angry. We have not done anything wrong yet people have stopped trusting Kolkata Police due to the malicious campaign of the media. We never said that there is only one accused in this case. We said that we are waiting for scientific evidence and it takes time. I cannot arrest a young PG student just on the basis of rumours, it is against my conscience.

He also said that there is a lot of pressure from the media. I have clearly said that we did what was right. Now the investigation is with the CBI. They will conduct a fair investigation. We will fully cooperate with the CBI. There is a lot of false propaganda here that bones are broken, this has been done… that has been done. Unfortunately the scientific evidence that has been found does not support these rumours.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee posted on Twitter that hooliganism and vandalism at RG Kar tonight has crossed all boundaries. I have spoken to the Kolkata Police Commissioner and have asked him to identify everyone responsible for this violence and bring them to justice in the next 24 hours, regardless of their political affiliation. The demands of the protesting doctors are genuine. Can’t they expect even this much from the government? Their safety must be given priority.
