Students had protested against the Kolkata rape murder case in the name of ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’. They had demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Calcutta High Court has ordered the state police to release student Sayan Lahiri, who was protesting against the Kolkata rape murder case. He was accused of taking out a Nabanna rally without permission. Several policemen were injured during the violence in this rally.

The court reprimanded the police and said that the officers should have handled the issue sensitively and not targeted the protesters and stopped them from agitating. The police should understand that people are angry about the Kolkata rape murder case.

Actually, the activists of West Bengal Student Society had protested against the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor on 27 August, which was named ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’. This protest turned violent and more than 100 students and more than 25 policemen were injured. After this, the police arrested Sayan Lahiri for leading the rally.

The student’s mother said- the student was upset due to the college incident
Lahiri’s mother had filed a petition in the High Court against her son’s arrest. She had said that her son was not associated with the West Bengal Students’ Society and neither did he lead any rally. He was very upset with the incident that happened in the medical college. That is why he had just joined the students’ protest.

While ordering the release of the student, the court said that if the incident had not happened in the medical college, the West Bengal Students Society would not have existed. Thousands of common people joined the protest rally. The petitioner’s son may have played an active role and may have been a little more vocal than other protesters. This does not mean that the petitioner’s son is the leader of the rally.
