Congress had sought chairmanship of 6 committees from the Central Government.
The Departmental Parliamentary Standing Committee was formed late Thursday night for the year 2024-25 in the third term of the Modi government. Each committee includes members of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
Congress has been given the chairmanship of four major panels. It includes committees on foreign affairs, education and agricultural affairs. Rahul Gandhi has been made a member of the Defense Affairs Committee. It will be presided over by BJP’s Radha Mohan Singh.
However, Sonia Gandhi’s name is not in any committee. The party had demanded the chairmanship of 6 standing committees from the central government.

Question:How many departments of the government? Parliamentary Standing Committee? answer: There are a total of 24 Departmental Parliamentary Standing Committees associated with all the Ministries/Departments of the Government of India. These committees are of two types – first – standing committee, second – ad hoc committee. Ad hoc committees are formed for some specific work. Once that work is completed the committee is dissolved.
Question: Are there separate committees in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha? answer: A total of 24 Parliamentary Standing Committees are divided into two parts. There are 16 committees in the Lok Sabha, while 8 committees operate under the Rajya Sabha.
Question: How many members are there in this committee? answer: Each of these committees has 31 members, out of which 21 are elected from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The tenure of all these committees does not exceed one year.
Question: Who selects the members of the committee? answer: Members of the Standing Committee, also known as the Panel of MPs. He is nominated by the Speaker of the House. They work as per the instructions of the Chairman.
Question: What is the tenure of the committee? answer: There are a total of 50 parliamentary committees in the Parliament. These include 3 Financial Committees, 24 Departmental Committees, 10 Standing Committees and 3 Adhoc Committees whose tenure is one year. The tenure of 4 adhoc committees and 1 standing committee is 5 years. At the same time, the tenure of 5 other standing committees is not fixed.
Question: What is the work of Parliamentary Committee? answer: Every department has a different committee. The main work of this committee is to investigate irregularities in related matters, give new suggestions and prepare drafts of new rules and regulations.
Example: Congress leader KC Venugopal chairs the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament. This committee came into discussion recently. There was news that PAC may investigate the allegations against Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chief Madhabi Puri Buch. The PAC is preparing to interrogate officials of the ministries of finance and corporate affairs in this matter. Butch may be called to appear before the PAC by the end of September for investigation in this matter.
Question: Where did the Parliamentary Committee get these rights? answer: The MPs (committee members) included in the Parliamentary Standing Committee get two rights under the Constitution. First Article 105 – It gives special rights to MPs to interfere in any work. Under which they give their opinions and suggestions in the committee. Second Article 118- It gives the right to make rules and laws for the functioning of the Parliament.
