He faced the challenge himself, studied for hundreds of hours… then he was able to prepare a strategy for his clients

Virginia real estate agent Karen Schiro felt like she was suffering from burnout but couldn’t figure out how to deal with it. Then she contacted renowned burnout coach Elin Schinke.

In six months of weekly video calls and conversations, Karen reduced her overloaded to-do list. She made some small changes – like writing in her email signature – I will not be able to reply after 6 pm … Karen says this seemed stupid, but an outsider’s perspective was needed to fix this coordination …

Karen is not alone, a large number of people suffer from workplace burnout. This has also increased the trend of seeking help from a burnout coach. Burnout coach Ria Batchelder says, ‘I spent hundreds of hours researching this topic. Only then am I able to help people.’

Pressure-cooker corporate culture, a lack of mental health resources, and the pandemic have fueled the demand for burnout coaches, who are looking for innovative ways to deal with them, says Professor Michael Leiter, who studies burnout.

The American Psychological Association’s annual survey found that 77% of the nation’s workers experience work-related stress. Burnout coaches say they are not replacing doctors, but rather offer a different kind of support. Their clients say burnout coaches are helpful in solving their workplace challenges.

A session of a burnout coach lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. The fee for one session starts at Rs 20,000, while packages run into thousands of dollars. Most coaches have faced this challenge and are thus able to solve clients’ problems in a better way. For example, Batchelder left his corporate law career due to burnout.

“I studied to help myself,” she says. Learning stress management techniques such as breathing exercises, setting boundaries and routines gave her insights to help clients.

Coaches also check for poor sleep patterns and lack of workouts

Burnout expert Prof. Chris Bittinger of Purdue University, USA, says, through this coaching we help people understand their priorities and manage their time better. This enables them to focus on activities that bring satisfaction and reduce stress.

Coaches help set realistic goals. Regular sessions create a roadmap for accountability, ensuring clients stay committed to recovery and don’t fall back into old habits. They examine habits like poor sleep patterns, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, or self-neglect to find the cause of burnout.
