Of the 40 senior MLAs demanding cabinet reshuffle in Karnataka Congress, 30 reached Delhi on Sunday. Here he will meet the party high command and demand reshuffle in the cabinet and giving opportunity to new faces.
About 40 MLAs, who have become MLAs more than three times, are demanding that the present ministers have got almost three years’ time, hence now senior MLAs should be given a chance. On the other hand, MLAs elected for the first time have also increased the pressure and reiterated their demand to make ministers.
Karnataka Congress MLA Ashok Pattan said that while distributing the portfolios, Randeep Surjewala had assured that everyone would get a chance, but the same people are being appointed to the same ministries again and again for the fourth time. The MLAs are not blackmailing anyone, but have just come to remind the party leadership of its old promise.
38 MLAs elected for the first time also sought ministerial posts.
The demand for cabinet reshuffle is not limited to just senior MLAs. 38 Congress MLAs who became MLAs for the first time have also mobilized. These MLAs have recently written a letter to the party leadership demanding that at least 5 of them should be made ministers during the reshuffle.
Ravikumar Gowda (Ravi Ganiga), the first-time MLA from Mandya, said that every MLA has a desire to become a minister and new faces should also get a chance.
He said, “Our demand is that at least five first-time MLAs should be included in the cabinet. It is not wrong to demand.”
He also raised questions on the functioning of some present ministers and said that some ministers are neither available nor the work is being done properly.
2 cabinet posts already vacant
A total of 34 ministers including the Chief Minister have approval in Karnataka. At present two ministerial posts are already vacant. One of these posts became vacant after the resignation of B Nagendra, who was accused of embezzlement in Karnataka Maharishi Valmiki ST Development Corporation.
The second post became vacant after the removal of KN Rajanna on the instructions of the party high command. In such a situation, the MLAs are demanding that along with filling these posts, there should be a comprehensive reshuffle.
The leaders who reached Delhi included TB Jayachandra, Ashok Pattan, SN Narayanswami, K. Many MLAs including Shadakshari, AR Krishnamurthy, Puttaranga Shetty and Belur Gopal Krishna are included. These leaders will also meet Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal, Randeep Singh Surjewala and if possible, Rahul Gandhi.
Senior MLA TB Jayachandra said that this is a regular political process and their main agenda is just cabinet reshuffle. He made it clear that the issue of change of leadership is not on his agenda.
He said, “The government has completed three years and now only two years are left. In such a situation, senior MLAs should also get an opportunity to become ministers.”
Leadership tussle also behind the reshuffle
This stir in Karnataka Congress has intensified at a time when there is a tussle regarding leadership within the party. At the time of government formation in 2023, there was discussion about the alleged power-sharing formula between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.
Now the government is reaching the middle stage of its tenure, after which speculations about change of leadership have also increased. According to party sources, Siddaramaiah is in favor of cabinet reshuffle, while Shivakumar wants a decision on leadership change first.
There is also discussion in political circles that if the high command approves the cabinet reshuffle, it can be taken as an indication that Siddaramaiah will complete his five-year term. This may affect Shivkumar’s chances of becoming Chief Minister.
Shivkumar had said- Everyone wants to become a minister or chief minister.
Meanwhile, Deputy CM DK Shivkumar had also said on Thursday that if the Chief Minister has indicated about reshuffle, then it is natural for every MLA to aspire to become a minister or Chief Minister. He had said- There is nothing wrong in this. Everyone can try.
