West Bengal- Mamata Banerjee has been the Chief Minister for the third time: BJP has been the main challenge before CM Mamata for 14 years. If TMC wins the 2026 elections, Mamata Banerjee will become the Chief Minister for the fourth consecutive time. She will be the first woman in the country to do so. Jayalalitha has the record of becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu 5 times. However, she served as Chief Minister for different tenures (not consecutively) from 1991 to 2016.

Tamil Nadu- BJP-Congress could not come to power here for 60 years: After independence, the Congress government was in power here for almost two decades. Congress lost the 1967 assembly elections and with it came a major change in the politics of the state. Since 1967, Tamil Nadu politics has mainly revolved between the AIADMK and the DMK.

Currently, there is a DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by MK Stalin, which came to power after the 2021 assembly elections. The party has formed an alliance with Congress, VCK and Left parties. BJP did form an alliance with parties like AIADMK in many elections, but it did not have its own government in the state.

Kerala- the only state in the south where Left is in power: This is the only state in the country where the Left is still in power. There has been a tradition of changing power here, but in 2021, the Left Front (LDF) broke this trend and formed the government for the second consecutive time. This time the Congress alliance will try to cash in on anti-incumbency.

At the same time, BJP has not been able to win even a single assembly seat in Kerala so far. He had won the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat in the last Lok Sabha elections. Apart from this, in December 2025 also, BJP won the Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) Municipal Corporation elections for the first time.

Assam- Congress made alliance with 8 parties: There is BJP government in the state for 10 years. The party is busy preparing for the third election. PM Modi has visited the state 3 times in 6 months. Here the party has set a target of winning 100+ seats out of 126 seats. In Assam there are issues like Bangladesh, infiltrators/border security, Assamese identity. Congress has formed an alliance with 10 parties to stop BJP. It includes leftist and regional parties.

Puducherry- Assembly with least number of seats: After the fall of the Congress government in 2021, the AINRC-BJP alliance regained power and N. Rangaswamy once again became the Chief Minister. This was the first time that BJP became a direct partner in power. This time Congress is trying to get back into alliance with DMK and wants to turn the issue of government fall into anti-incumbency.
