Amid the ongoing controversy on social media regarding Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman’s recent statement, his daughters Khatija Rehman and Rahima Rehman have openly come out in support of him. Both of them shared the post of Malayalam musician Kailash Menon on their Instagram story, in which an appeal has been made to maintain restraint and respect on Rahman’s statement. Khatija Rehman has also commented on Kailash Menon’s post by posting clap, fire and heart emojis. Kailash has written a long note while sharing a screenshot of the post calling Rahman a disgrace to Tamil Nadu and India. He writes – “Those who are blaming AR Rahman for speaking his mind openly are ignoring a fundamental thing. He spoke his mind. It is his right. You can disagree with him, but you cannot deprive him of the freedom to express his experiences.” Calling a globally respected artist ‘disrespectful’, questioning his faith, mocking his recent works and presenting his life experiences as a victim card is not criticism. This is hate speech presented in the form of opinion. Kailash wrote that Rahman’s decades-long contribution to Indian and global music cannot be erased on the basis of a personal opinion. He writes – “This is no ordinary voice” but the voice of a person “who took Indian music to the world, represented the country with dignity and shaped generations through his work. Decades of contribution to Tamil culture, Indian cinema and global music cannot be forgotten merely by an artiste expressing his personal views.” You can argue with their opinion on a movie. You may disagree with what they say. This is appropriate. But what is not appropriate is to insult them publicly or try to suppress their point of view by questioning their integrity. Freedom of speech applies to Rahman as much as to his critics.” Let us tell you that in a recent interview, AR Rahman had said that after the power shift in the Hindi film industry, he is getting less work than before and “communal factor” could also be a reason behind this. After this statement he had to face sharp criticism on social media. As the controversy escalated, AR Rahman released a video message and clarified his point. He said that India is an inspiration, guru and home for him. His aim has always been to connect and honor people through music.
