Iranian President Masoud Pazhakian says that this law is vague and still needs reform. He has asked for reconsideration of some of its provisions. According to this law, there is a provision of 15 years in jail and fine for women who do not completely cover their hair, hands and legs.

Many human rights organizations including Amnesty International have criticized this law.

Debate on hijab law intensifies after singer’s arrest After the arrest of female singer Parastu Ahmadi last week, the debate regarding hijab law has intensified. Parastu Ahmadi uploaded the video of the concert on YouTube on Wednesday, 11 December. In this video, Ahmadi was singing a song wearing a sleeveless dress.

After the video was uploaded, a case was registered against him in a court on Thursday. After this, Parastu Ahmadi was arrested on Saturday.

According to BBC, more than 300 Iranian activists, writers and journalists have recently signed a petition, calling this new law illegal.

Singer Parastu Ahmadi had uploaded the video of her concert on YouTube, in which she was seen singing a song wearing a sleeveless dress.

The President has opposed hijab laws many times President Massoud Pazhakian has also opposed hijab laws several times. He says that no one has the right to moral policing. After the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, he had said that it is our mistake. We want to impose our religious beliefs through force. This is not scientifically possible.

Pazashkian used the song of Iranian women’s freedom in 2022 – ‘Aurat, Zindagi, Azadi’ – in his rally. This song is from ‘Baraa’, a campaign run for women’s freedom in Iran.

In 2022, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested by the police for not wearing hijab. He died in police custody three days after his arrest. After this, there were massive demonstrations across Iran regarding the Hijab law.

Khamenei supporters insist on implementing the law On the other hand, supporters of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are insisting on implementing this law. Many officials fear that if there is a delay in implementing this law, massive protests may begin in the country.
